Maya archaeologists unearth new 2012 monument with 'end date' of Dec. 21, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Archaeologists working at the site of La Corona in Guatemala have discovered a 1,300-year-old-year Maya text that provides only the second known reference to the so-called "end date" of the Maya calendar, December 21, 2012. The discovery, one of the most significant hieroglyphic finds in decades, was announced June 28 at the National Palace in Guatemala.

"This text talks about ancient political history rather than prophecy," says Marcello A. Canuto, director of Tulane's Middle American Research Institute and co-director of the excavations at La Corona.

Since 2008, Canuto and Tom?s Barrientos of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala have directed excavations at La Corona, a site previously ravaged by looters.

"Last year, we realized that looters of a particular building had discarded some carved stones because they were too eroded to sell on the antiquities black market," said Barrientos, "so we knew they found something important, but we also thought they might have missed something."

What Canuto and Barrientos found was the longest text ever discovered in Guatemala. Carved on staircase steps, it records 200 years of La Corona history, states David Stuart, director of the Mesoamerica Center at The University of Texas at Austin, who was part of a 1997 expedition that first explored the site.

While deciphering these new finds in May, Stuart recognized the 2012 reference on a stairway block bearing 56 delicately carved hieroglyphs. It commemorated a royal visit to La Corona in AD 696 by the most powerful Maya ruler of that time, Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' of Calakmul, only a few months after his defeat by long-standing rival Tikal in AD 695. Thought by scholars to have been killed in this battle, this ruler was visiting allies and allaying their fears after his defeat.

"This was a time of great political turmoil in the Maya region and this king felt compelled to allude to a larger cycle of time that happens to end in 2012," says Stuart.

So, rather than prophesy, the 2012 reference places this king's troubled reign and accomplishments into a larger cosmological framework.

"In times of crisis, the ancient Maya used their calendar to promote continuity and stability rather than predict apocalypse," says Canuto.

Brave | Arts & Entertainment | South Philly Review

Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) in Pixar?s ?Brave? shows girls that they can shoot a bow and arrow, too.

It may be clearer than ever that Pixar?s golden era went out with ?Toy Story 3,? the jewel in the crown of an animation studio that ruled over its medium for 15 glorious years. But does ?Brave,? Pixar?s new badass-Scottish-lass adventure, deserve to be flogged simply because it?s not ?WALL?E?-level transcendent? Yes and no. Solid yet innocuous, moving yet minimally ambitious, this old-fashioned fantasy is an oxymoronic specimen, aiming for progressiveness while clinging to safe traditions. But it nevertheless offers something rarely seen in the world of toons: A mother-daughter tale that leaves the boys on the side.

Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is your typical oppressed tomboy princess, a nervy athlete who?d rather fire arrows than follow the rules of her mother (voiced by Emma Thompson), a stern queen trying to marry Merida off. Before you can say ?Mulan,? our free-thinking heroine is pulling an Ariel, consulting a shady witch to ?change her fate.? What results is as zanily random as it is intentionally gender-subverting, and when not inducing yawns with lazy plot offshoots (the male characters simply holler and spar), the combo yields tender common ground for its feuding kinswomen.

Directed by Pixar?s Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, ?Brave? follows Disney?s ?Tangled? as a film in which hair proves a benchmark in animation?s evolution (Merida?s springy, scarlet locks are wondrous to behold). But, more importantly, the movie boasts Pixar?s first female lead, a separate benchmark many will view as a blown opportunity.

Andrews and Chapman may pilot their film to an affecting resolution, but their introductory scene of Merida triumphantly scaling a mountain (one of many moments with misty vistas), is hardly a promise that?s kept. ?Brave? is an atmospheric jaunt with quirky flourishes, but its bound to leave the gals in the audience feeling a bit shortchanged. Whereas, say, ?Up? presented a man with startling human complexity, Pixar?s unwittingly regressive 13th feature keeps things light and unchallenging, all while quietly waving a flag of feminism. Instead of passing women the ball, it merely throws them a bone.

Willem Dafoe fans shouldn?t miss the eco-drama ?The Hunter,? which sees the chameleonic actor take the lead as a sharp-shooting mercenary, tasked to hunt down an endangered animal in Tasmania. Shot on location, the film is predominantly picturesque, and it ably blends environmental themes with taut conflict. Its scattered missteps are overshadowed by Dafoe, who gives a soulful performance as the noirish antihero.

Round 2 goes to Phelps; Franklin denies Coughlin

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Back and forth they went, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte turning the U.S. Olympic trials into nothing more than a match race between the world's two greatest swimmers.

They might as well have been the only guys in the pool, their arms whirling furiously, the two of them never more than a few inches apart. Then, at the wall, they thrust out their right arms.

    Phelps touched first.

    By five-hundredths of a second.

Sending an emphatic message to his biggest rival, Phelps stretched out to win a thrilling 200-meter freestyle Wednesday night, setting up a duel in London that just gets more tantalizing with every race.

"Neither one of us likes to lose," Phelps said. "We're going to have a lot of races like that over the next couple of weeks. That's how it always seems to shake out when we're in the water."

Can't wait until the next one.

Lochte won the 400 individual medley on the opening night of the trials, his third straight major victory over the winningest Olympian ever. But Phelps isn't going down that easily.

He got off to a stronger start that usual, leading at the first turn and holding the advantage through all four laps. Both swimmers got a big boost off the final turn, cutting through the water like missiles, and Lochte went stroke for stroke down the stretch. But Phelps stretched out his right arm at the wall, touching just ahead of Lochte. The winning time was 1 minute, 45.70 seconds.

"I'm glad I got one back," Phelps said. "But we;re going to have a lot more of those"

Phelps' victory was even more impressive given his busy night. He didn't even have time to celebrate, hustling back to the warm-down pool to get ready for the semifinals of the 200 butterfly. He came back 40 minutes later to post the third-fastest qualifying time, moving on to Thursday night's final looking to lock up a chance to defend the gold he won at the last two Olympics.

"I feel old," the 26-year-old Phelps quipped.

Speaking of busy, Missy Franklin left no doubt that she is swimming's next big star with a stunning performance in the 100 backstroke, signaling a changing of the guard in an event Natalie Coughlin captured at the last two Olympics.

Coming back to the pool just 20 minutes after qualifying for the final of the 200 freestyle, the 17-year-old "Missile" chased down Coughlin on the return lap to win with an American record of 58.85.

"I have dreamed of this moment, but I never thought it would come true at 17 years old," Franklin said. "Dreams do come true."

Coughlin got off to a typically strong start and was under world-record pace at the turn. But the 29-year-old couldn't hold off two teenagers. Eighteen-year-old Rachel Bootsma got past the 11-time Olympic medalist, as well, claiming the second Olympic spot in 59.49.

Coughlin was third in 1:00.06 and has only one more chance to make her third Olympic team: the 100 freestyle. She swam over to congratulate Franklin in the middle of the pool, but her chances of making a third straight Olympic team are hanging in the balance.

She hopes to have a shot at winning at least one medal in London, which would pull her even with Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres as the most decorated U.S. female Olympians.

"I did exactly what I needed to do tonight and gave it my best. That's really all you can ask for," Coughlin said. "I have won two golds in that. I am very proud of what I've done in the 100 backstroke and it's time for Missy and Bootsma."

Thompson and Torres each have 12 medals, and the 45-year-old Torres is back trying to make one more Olympic team. She has entered only one event in Omaha and has yet to swim.

Coughlin is down to her last chance in 2012.

"It's not exactly what I was hoping for coming into this," she said. "I'm a little bummed, but not nearly as much as everyone is expecting me to be. You're walking around the pool deck and people are acting like you're dying or something. I have another shot to make the team in the 100 free, and I'm looking forward to that. For the rest of this season, I'm a freestyler."

In another final, Breeja Larson pulled off a huge upset in the 100 breaststroke, beating Rebecca Soni and world-record holder Jessica Hardy. Larson won in 1:05.92, while Soni rallied to get the second spot on the team at 1:05.99.

"Maybe after tonight my dad owes me a steak dinner," said Larson, who is competing in her first trials. "After the steak has settled in, I might believe it."

Hardy finished third ? about a half-second too slow to earn a spot in London. She was eager for redemption after missing out on the 2008 Olympics because of a failed doping test, which resulted in a one-year suspension. An arbitration panel reduced the normal two-year ban, ruling that Hardy was the victim of a tainted supplement.

"It was a great race for me," said Hardy, who still has a shot to make the team in the 100 free. "I think I held it together. I'm happy with it. I gave it a good shot."

Also, Matt Grevers captured the men's 100 backstroke with the second-fastest time ever, 52.08. Nick Thoman finished second in 52.86 to take the second spot on the Olympic team.

"I wanted to for the world record after prelims," said Grevers, who was only 14-hundredths off Aaron Peirsol's mark. "I'm the guy to shoot for now, and I like that."

Lochte said he went out too slow in the beginning of the 200 free, a mistake he intends to correct when he gets to London. Phelps' winning time was nearly 3 seconds slower than his gold-medal effort in Beijing, though that was aided by high-tech bodysuits, which have since been banned by the world governing body.

"We didn't really try to pick it up until, like, the last 75, so I'll save that for the Olympics," said Lochte, whose time was 1:45.75. "I was just really relaxed for the first 125, and then the last 75, I was like, 'All right, now we've got to put it in gear.' So I kind of waited a little late, but I'll take it."

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, said Phelps and Lochte were so concerned with racing each other "that they forgot to go fast." Phelps actually posted a faster time in a Grand Prix meet this year.

"When we're next to each other, we sort of play cat-and-mouse," Phelps said. "We like to see what each other does ... then put every ounce of energy into the last 50."

They'll have one more showdown in Omaha, facing off in the 200 individual medley. Then it's off to the meet that really matters, where Phelps is plotting another eight-event program in what he says will be his final Olympics, giving him a chance to match his record performance four years ago.

Lochte is standing in the way this time.

"I love racing against him," the Floridian said. "It was really fun."

Assailants attack Microsoft HQ in Athens

(AP) ? Assailants attacked the offices of Microsoft in Athens early Wednesday, driving a van through the front doors and setting off an incendiary device that burned the building entrance, police said.

There were no reports of injuries in the pre-dawn attack on the U.S. company's headquarters in the Greek capital, located in the Maroussi suburb north of the city center.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Authorities said no warning call had been made before the attack.

Greece has experienced attacks by several small armed anarchist or domestic terrorist groups for decades, which usually target official buildings, banks or symbols of state power with small bombs or incendiary devices. The attacks usually occur late at night and rarely cause injuries.

Police said initial information indicated three people had been inside the van. They forced the two security guards at the building to leave before they reversed the van into the front entrance, smashing the door.

The two security guards were giving testimony to police.

The assailants then triggered an incendiary device inside the van that police said appeared to have consisted of camping gas canisters and several containers of gasoline.

Police forensic teams examined the burned-out van, which was still outside the blackened entrance later Monday morning.

Although they have died down over the past year, attacks had spiked following the fatal police shooting of a teenager in Athens in December 2008 that led to widespread riots across the country.

One group that had appeared in the aftermath of the rioting had set itself apart by claiming responsibility for shooting dead an anti-terrorism police officer in central Athens in 2009 and a journalist in 2010.

    Horror Stories in Estate Planning

WillsThere are numerous stories that we tell that incite fear and apprehension in ourselves. However, none maybe so frightening than those that affect us in our everyday lifes. For example, an attorney once recalled how, after examining the trust instrument of one of his clients, he discovered that the trust was set to give $50,000 to two different people. What makes this scary for our client was that he didn't know who those people were. In fact, it became apparent that the previous attorney who drafted the trust only copied and pasted an old trust and failed to take out the information that didn't belong to the new client. Still, even this cannot compare to horror when the mistake is not discovered until after the death of the person who wrote the will or was the settlor of the trust. These horror stories are the product of poor planning and foresight. Some experts believe that this is the reason because many clients have estate planning document created by attorneys who do not specialize in estate planning. It's not that these attorneys are bad, it is just that they might not give as much foresight and planning as those who specialize in the field when creating the estate planning documents.?

In reality, it is combination of everything. Not one problem is solely responsible for bad trust instruments and wills. Sometimes it's a combination of two things like an inexperienced attorney and flawed language. For trusts in particular, the wording in a trust can be problematic if the trust is not updated at least once a year especially when a change in circumstance occurs. In this type of instance, it might be the client that is the problem.?

The SPORTS PHILOSOPHER says: 'Never pass up a sales ...

???????Just got back from an 8-day driving vacation with my boy.? ?Epic stuff. ??Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and back to Minnesota in less than 8 days. ??Yes, it was great. ??Yes, we had many exciting, thrill-packed adventures. ??Yes, it was totally heartwarming. ??How heartwarming? ??Like this being the first time I ever let my boy drive a car. ??In a deserted church parking lot in Luxemburg, Minnesota, of all places. ??Anyway, he drove the car. ??(My son is driving??.egad!)

???? And yes, one of Life?s genuine bonuses, there was plenty of humor to be found in the simple daily study of the ?Human Condition?, as I like to call it. ???Like the time in Park Rapids, Minnesota, when this girl counter-clerk at a ?Kum & Go? market (yes, I?m not kidding and yes, the Midwest has dozens of them and yes, that?s really how they spell it) told us that in the town of Nevis, six miles away, there was the biggest fish in the whole United States. ??I pressed her for details, where was it caught, how long ago, is it stuffed and mounted etc., but all she would say is, ?You?ll see. ??Just head right up the main street, can?t miss it. ??It?s totally worth the drive.?? It?s the biggest fish in America!? ?Just go there and see it!? ??So on her say-so I drove the six miles. ??Well, it was a big fish all right?.but not a real fish. ??It was merely a 20-foot-long cement statue of a fish.? ?Alongside the road.?? A cement fish.?? ?Painted yellow.

    The Twins

    The Twins

???? I wanted to go back to that Park Rapids Kum & Go and ring the girl?s neck, but my level-headed son restrained me.

???? And then there was the time in Eagan, Minnesota, at a Kentucky Fried Chicken store, when the clerk let our food sit there on the counter to get cold and stale?ten feet away from our waiting mouths?while he looked all over the store for some plastic forks and a clean tray.? ?There were no clean trays so he washed one. ??Slowly.?? Then he went into the back of the store to perform some other nebulous, time-consuming errand. ??Well, we finally got our ?food?. ??But this time it was me restraining my son. ??(You don?t get between a growing boy and his daily grub, people.)

???? But the funniest one (or maybe it?s so sad it?s not so funny, I go back and forth on it) occurred in Excelsior, Minnesota, my own late mother?s home town. ??We were sitting in the Excelsior Grill, having just ordered a breakfast sandwich (for Rob) and pancakes and bacon (for me). ??It took me a long time to get our waitress to understand what we wanted. ??That should have been my first warning clue. ??I had to tell her large orange juice not small orange juice three times.

???? Anyway, ten minutes go by, and no sign of food. ??Finally she half toddles and half waddles over (her rear carriage was as broad as a wide-screen TV), and she smiles and says, ?Have you decided??

    ? ????Decided what?? I rejoin.

???? ?I mean can I take your order now?? she re-queries.

???? Rob looks at me, I look at Rob, we both look at her.

???? ?You already took my order,? I say.

    ???? ?I did?? she says.

???? I thought Rob was going to explode, but the lad controlled himself.? ?Even more amazingly, so did I.

???? So she ran back to her station, found the order slip (she still could not remember, apparently, the large vs. small orange juice fiasco), and was so apologetic and embarrassed that later I gave her a jumbo-sized tip. ??Poor girl.

???? I?m not going to say all Midwesterners are dumb or anything like that. ??Being a born and bred Midwesterner myself, that would condemn me by association. ??But please allow me, for a moment, to just metaphorically shake my head in wonder.?? I?m sure you?re doing the same.

???? Anyway, regarding Sports (this of course being a half sports, half philosophy column), I had thought that the signature sports moment of the trip would come in Fargo, North Dakota, at the Roger Maris Museum honoring Fargo?s favorite son. ??And the Maris Museum was good, though not spectacular. ??For one thing, it?s not a museum.? ?It?s just a bunch of jerseys and trophies pertaining to the old Yankee home run king on display in a large picture window in the middle of a Fargo shopping mall. ??That?s it. ??Oh, plus a delightful little theater the size of a bathroom, where they play this continuous loop of Roger?s life every 20 minutes all day long.? ?I did tear up, choke up, and break down a little bit when they showed Rog returning to Yankee Stadium at the end of his life, to the unrestrained cheers he never got when he had the audacity to break Babe Ruth?s single-season home run record. ??I get so emotional in my old age?.

???? But no. ??The Maris Museum was not the sports highlight of the trip. ??That came at Target Field in Minneapolis. ??I had pre-ordered tickets to a Minnesota Twins/Milwaukee Brewers game, which now makes eight baseball stadiums around the country I have taken my boy to over the years. ??And a beautiful stadium it was. ??Complete with terrific bronze statues of all-time greats like Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, and Kirby Puckett. ??And great seats! ??Right behind the dugout, with crisp vendor service, fresh food, and thickly padded chairs. ??Padded. ???Like resting one?s arse upon great tuffets of marshmallow.? ?I hope some pimply-faced Dodger Stadium exec is reading this?.

???? It was a decent game. ??The National League?s best player, Milwaukee?s Ryan Braun, was nice enough to pound out two home runs and a double for us, thus making the game memorable forever for my boy. ??But what made it special for the Sports Philosopher is what happened in the stands, as in where we were sitting.

???? These three post-college fellas were sitting right next to me.? ?Mid-twenties guys. ???Minnesota natives all. ??We got to talking early on, and it was obvious they knew their baseball, so there was no need for me to instruct them in the finer points of the game. ??Rather I let them instruct me on the current state of Twins baseball in this new millennium of ours, with yours truly only contributing something if and when it fit in with their three-way lecture. ??These were smart, rugged, boisterous young men, and they were a pleasure to talk to and listen to.

???? Finally, near the end of the game, ?long about the 8th inning I believe, they got the idea from our talk that I was an L.A. father currently engaged in driving his 15-year-old son around the upper Midwest, looking for fun and educational things to do. ??They rattled off the usual Minnesota staples, i.e. all the Paul Bunyan statues, the Mississippi River headwaters, various parks, fishing, camping etc. ??And then, one of the lads suddenly pipes up with gusto, ?I know what you can do. ??We?ve got a really good track here. ??You should go.?

???? ?A, uh, track you say?? says I, curiously and haltingly.

???? ?Yeah, a racetrack!? he volleys back.? ??Horses!? ?It?s called Canterbury Downs, right down the road, one of the best tracks in the country. ??Take your kid there tomorrow!?

???? Not wanting to tell this eager chap that Canterbury Downs is little more than a milk-run bullring course compared to storied local tracks like our own Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, I play dumb and let them have their moment, despite my whimsical kid jabbing me in the ribs to tell them what I know. ??But I hold off. ??Because it?s just too perfect.? ?I?ll be darned,? is all I say, and quite theatrically I imagine.

???? And then comes the moment I was waiting for:

???? ?Sir, have you ever even been to a racetrack???? one of the lads inquires with great urgency.

???? And now Rob looks at me and I look at him, he starts to smile, his face twists up with the same impish glee as when our Excelsior Grill waitress had her Alzheimer?s moment, but I ?shhh? him, and then I turn back to the three twenty-somethings and re-query, ?Do you boys enjoy reading fiction??

???? I have found, over time, that this is a question almost no adult will ever answer ?no? to out loud. ??Out of both embarrassment and pride. ??But it is also a question that most people?say, under either threat of torture or the influence of truth serum?would truthfully answer ?no? to as if they were being asked do you like Hitler. ??But with no truth serum available, naturally they all nodded their heads yes. ??Three fine young men of letters.?? Three confirmed fiction readers. ??Sure.

???? So I called their collective bluff.? ?I stood, pulled free my wallet, and pulled out three business cards. ??And my business card, as it so happens, is simply and solely an information card on how to go about ordering my novel, which deals (in part) with life at the racetrack.? ?It?s called WHERE GODS GAMBLE. ??I passed out the three cards. ??And these cards, to even further crystallize the moment, even feature an illustration of two racehorses and their jockeys battling to the wire. ??It was perfect.

???? ?There you go, boys,? I said.? ??Since you?re so knowledgeable about the track and since you love reading fiction so much, this novel should be a natural for you.?

    ???? Their mouths fell open.

???? When they recovered their senses they started asking me questions. ??Lots of questions. ??Soon they had been informed that I had already been to literally dozens of different racecourses on this continent and three others, that I had been to the track literally hundreds and hundreds of times, that I had relentlessly pursued this lifelong hobby at racecourses from L.A. to Melbourne to Nairobi, to Paris, to Baden-Baden, to all over England, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as Toronto, New York, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego, Tijuana, and back to L.A. again. ??And that most of these visits to the track occurred before any of them were born. ??To say the lads were stunned is to state only the obvious. ??Rob did a good job of not giggling. ??(But later on he gushed forth his laughter: ?Dad, it was all I could do to not to burst out laughing when that guy asked you if you?d ever been to a racetrack!? he said.? ??Me too,? I said back to him.)

???? When the Twins finally made the last out of their 6-2 defeat to the hated Brew Crew we all stood, shook hands, and wished each other well.

???? ?Enjoy the book, fellas,? I said, as they all had vigorously promised (remember, no truth serum) to buy the damn thing.

???? To which one of the lads replied, ?I can?t believe we actually asked you if you?d ever gone to the track and here you?d written a whole book about it! ??What are the odds of that??

???? ?Yes, life can be very amusing,? I agreed.

???? On the way back to the hotel, Rob asked me: ?Dad, do you think those guys will really buy your book??

???? A fair question.? ??Probably not, son,? I said honestly. ???But stranger things have happened. ??Maybe. ??Let?s just decide to pretend that they will.?

???? To which he rejoined, ?So what are we doing for dinner??

???? As many of you know, I usually like to end these parables and life-lessons with some kind of axiom the dedicated reader can take with him (or her) into the future.?? Or at least provide, hopefully, some crumb of genuine Enlightenment for those with a genuine thirst for knowledge.

    ???? This time it?s easy.

???? Here it is: Everyone should have a copy of WHERE GODS GAMBLE on his or her living room bookshelf.?? The world would be a better place.?? Certainly no worse.

???? Ordering information is provided below. ??Enjoy.

Alito, and Elena Kagan inside Supreme Court in Washington, Monday, June 25, 2012. (AP Photo/Dana Verkouteren)

(AP) ? The Supreme Court ruled Monday that it is unconstitutional for state laws to require juveniles convicted of murder to be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

The 5-4 decision is in line with others the court has made, including ruling out the death penalty for juveniles and life without parole for young people whose crimes did not involve killing. Monday's decision left open the possibility that judges could sentence juveniles to life without parole in individual cases of murder, but said state laws cannot automatically impose such a sentence.

We "hold that mandatory life without parole for those under the age of 18 at the time of their crimes violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on 'cruel and unusual punishment,'" said Justice Elena Kagan, who wrote the opinion for the majority. She was joined in that opinion by Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented.

"Even a 17 ? year-old who sets off a bomb in crowded mall or guns down a dozen students and teachers is a 'child' and must be given a chance to persuade a judge to permit his release into society," said Alito, who read his dissent aloud in the courtroom. "Nothing in the Constitution supports this arrogation of legislative authority."

The decision came in the robbery and murder cases of Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, who were 14 when they were convicted.

Jackson was sentenced to life in prison in Arkansas after the shooting death of a store clerk during an attempted robbery in 1999. Another boy shot the clerk, but because Jackson was present he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated robbery.

Miller was convicted of capital murder during the course of arson. A neighbor, while doing drugs and drinking with Miller and a 16-year-old boy, attacked Miller. Intoxicated, Miller and his friend beat the man and set fire to his home, killing the 52-year-old man. Miller's friend testified against him, and got life in prison with the possibility of parole.

"This is an important win for children. The court took a significant step forward by recognizing the fundamental unfairness of mandatory death-in-prison sentences that don't allow sentencers to consider the unique status of children and their potential for change," said Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who represented Jackson and Miller. "The court has recognized that children need additional attention and protection in the criminal justice system."

According to data provided to the court, roughly 2,500 people are behind bars for life with no chance of winning their freedom for murders they committed before their 18th birthday. Seventy-nine of them are in prison for crimes that took place when they were 14 or younger. More than 2,000 of them were there because the sentence was mandated by a legislature.

Denver officer shot, killed near park concert

(AP) ? A Denver police officer has died after being shot in the head while trying to break up a confrontation at a city park where hundreds of families had gathered for a free weekly jazz concert, a police spokesman said.

The gunfire erupted shortly after the band finished playing next to a pond at City Park. The officer who was shot was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

At least 1,000 people were at the City Park Jazz concert, the fourth of 10 shows scheduled for this summer in the annual series. The shots sent scores of park goers running.

Jackson said police were continuing to search for a suspect, while describing the shooting as an isolated incident. Earlier, police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez said a suspect was in custody, providing no further details.

The gunfire erupted shortly after the band finished playing next to a pond at City Park. At least 1,000 people were at the City Park Jazz concert, the fourth of 10 shows scheduled for this summer in the annual series.

After shots rang out, scores of people ran from the northwest side of the pond and stage area, confusing crowds on the south side of the pond who were still lingering over conversation and picnics in lawn chairs and blankets. Someone announced from a loudspeaker on stage that the park was closed and told park goers to leave from the south side.

Nakira Doss, 28, was sitting near the stage when she heard at least two shots. She said she covered her three children, ages 7, 5 and 4, as other concertgoers ran past.

"I told my kids to get on the ground, and I laid on top of them," she said.

Samuel Bell, 19, of Denver, said he was in the parking lot looking for a space for his scooter, which police later cordoned off with yellow tape. He said he heard several shots.

"We just arrived at the park. It was crowded, it was looking fun," Bell said. "And then 'pa- pa-pa-pa' outta nowhere.

"We just ducked," Bell said. "We pulled off in enough time to get away. It was crazy."

He said he saw police officers administering CPR. He estimated he was about 10 to 20 feet away from where the officer was shot.

DNP Chinese astronauts go handson, manually dock with orbiting module

Looks like China continues to add to its space cred after recently joining the rarefied ranks of countries that have successfully docked craft in the final frontier. Fresh off from the recent joining of the Shenzhou 9 capsule with the Tiangong 1 orbiting module, China's three astronauts have now replicated the feat manually, according to the Washington Post . For the uninitiated, the first docking was done via remote control from the ground. The mission has had plenty of firsts for China so far, including the country's first female astronaut. It also serves as a precursor to establishing China's first permanent space station, a 60-ton facility that's about a sixth of the size of the International Space Station but is slightly bigger than NASA's old Skylab. 'Cause sometimes, you just gotta have your own space in space, you know?
