The Democratic Party has added new language endorsing gay marriage in its platform draft, the Washington Blade reports. Sen. Harry Reid said in May that he believed the party would alter its platform in favor of gay marriage, after President Obama spoke out that month in favor of same-sex couples' right to marry. The Republican Party's platform calls for a constitutional amendment that would ban all same-sex marriages, even in states that allow them.

Canon LV-8227A

The Canon LV-8227A is an LCD-based business projector similar to the Canon LV-8320 that I recently reviewed but more moderately priced, and a tad smaller, lighter, and dimmer. The LV-8227A has fewer ports and less of a zoom range, and lacks a carrying case. They both have decent data and good video image quality, though, so choosing between them may depend on your needs and budget. There are other more capable choices out there, but the LV-8227A is a good deal for its price.

The LV-8227A has a rated brightness of 2,500 lumens and a native WXGA (1,280 by 800) resolution, a 16:10 aspect ratio compatible with many widescreen laptops. The brightness is a bit on the low side, as most similar projectors, including the LV-8320, pack around 3,000 lumens. The brightness difference is less than you might think, as perception of brightness is logarithmic.

The LV-8227A is silver colored with a deep gray base and rounded corners. At the lens are the focus and (1.2x) zoom rings. At 3.9 by 13.0 by 9.6 inches (HWD) and 6.5 pounds, this projector is portable, though a bit on the large size for regular toting, and it lacks a carrying case.

The LV-8227A has a basic set of ports: VGA (which triples as a component video and S-video input); 3 RCA jacks for composite audio/video; HDMI, RS232; Ethernet; audio-out, and a microphone jack. It lacks the LV-8320's dual VGA and audio-in ports as well as a dedicated S-video port.

Testing
I tested the LV-8227A from about 8 feet away; it threw an image that filled our 6-feet-diagonal test screen. Data image quality, tested using the DisplayMate suite, was suitable for typical business and classroom uses. Text quality was good, readable if a bit blurred at the smallest sizes.

Most colors seemed reasonably true, although one issue that I came across was tinting. White areas sometimes seemed slightly yellow, and grays frequently showed a greenish tint that at worst was significant enough to be distracting. Borders between bright and dark areas often showed a trace of color (yellow or blue) fringing. The tinting was less prominent, though still visible, in Presentation mode than in Standard mode. Though fine for most data presentations, I?d hesitate to use this projector in situations where exact color is important.

Video was a little above average for a data projector, good enough to show short to mid-length clips as part of a presentation. As an LCD projector, it's free of the potentially distracting rainbow effect that's an issue with many DLP projectors. Some flesh tones seemed on the pale side. Sound from the single 10W speaker was reasonably loud and of decent audio quality, adequate for a smallish room.

The Canon LV-8227A is slightly smaller and lighter than the LV-8320, which costs about $200 more based on current retail prices. The LV-8227A is slightly dimmer, which could make a difference in situations with considerable ambient light. It also has a less of a zoom range, making it less versatile in its placement, and a reduced set of ports. They're both capable projectors with decent data image quality, and as they're LCD based they're immune to the rainbow effect as a potential distraction (particularly with video) to those who are sensitive to it.

The Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 1775W Multimedia Projector is slim and light, and offers WiFi connectivity plus the ability to run presentations from a USB thumb drive. It offers excellent still and video image quality. It does, however, cost considerably more than the LV-8227A.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge has granted Sheryl Crow a temporary restraining order against a man who is accused of threatening to shoot the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.

The order requires Phillip Gordon Sparks, 45, to stay 100 yards away and not attempt to contact Crow, her family or any of her workers. She wrote in a sworn statement that she is fearful of Sparks because he has claimed in profane online tirades that she has stolen money from him and broken into his house.

She also states Sparks recently went to the offices of an entertainment union and told a worker that he was going to "just shoot" her.

A worker at the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrote in declaration accompanying Crow's filing that she spoke with Sparks on July 16 and he made the threat against Crow. He also threatened to shoot film executive Harvey Weinstein because he believed they were filming him and stole millions from him, the worker stated.

The temporary order was granted July 24 and first reported Monday by celebrity website TMZ. A hearing on a three-year protective order is scheduled for Aug. 14 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Attempts to contact Sparks were unsuccessful.

Crow, 50, has won nine Grammy Awards and has two sons, ages 5 and 2.

Android 4.0.4 XWLPO ICS Update for Samsung Galaxy S2: Install Firmware

Samsung released the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S2 smartphone earlier in the month. The firmware - XWLPM - is available as an Over the Air (OTA) update and is working its way across the world. A second update -?I9100XWLPO is available for European models - and has been released by members of the XDA Developer's forum.

In further good news for S2 owners, it seems Samsung has begun testing Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) for use on the device. An unnamed source spoke to SamMobile, stating tests were continuing and an update could happen very soon.

However, until the Jelly Bean update makes its appearance, S2 users can update their phones to the latest ICS software by following instructions given below. IBTimes UK warns users the XWLPO firmware is compatible only with Galaxy S2 model number I9100. In addition, we recommend users back-up important data, apps and APN settings.

North and South Korea mark war armistice

PANMUNJOM, Korea (AP) ? Ceremonies commemorating the Korean War armistice are under special scrutiny this year because of North Korea's military reshuffling and its young leader's newly-introduced wife.

Observances Friday in both North and South Korea follow Kim Jong Un's surprise dismissal of his military chief and his revelation that the mystery woman at his side in public appearances this month is his wife.

The military moves are seen as an effort to build loyalty among the million-man armed forces and solidify his credentials as commander.

North Korean media said veterans have traveled to Pyongyang to commemorate the armistice's 59th anniversary.

U.S. and South Korean officials commemorated the armistice that ended the 1950-1953 war at the border village of Panmunjom.

The Korean Peninsula remains technically in a state of war.

Scientists: Pop music too loud, all sounds same

LONDON -- Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.

Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.

"We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations -- roughly speaking chords plus melodies?-- has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

The song remains the same on mix of modern pop music

They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds.

Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier.

The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought.

Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

JPMorgan's Dimon reshuffles his management team

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon reshuffled his management team, signaling that the biggest U.S. bank is preparing for life after its famed boss leaves.

Analysts said the changes, announced on Friday, put Mike Cavanagh and Daniel Pinto among those in the running to succeed Dimon, 56, when he is ready to retire.

Cavanagh, 46, and Pinto, 49, are perceived as being in the next management generation, analysts said. In the shake-up, they were named co-chiefs of commercial and investment banking.

Matt Zames, 41, named co-chief operating officer, could also be in the running to succeed Dimon, analysts said.

The changes come two weeks after JPMorgan disclosed losses of nearly $6 billion in the first six months of 2012 from bad derivatives trades on corporate debt, a huge black eye for Dimon, a CEO long praised for his risk-management skills.

The shake-up will result in a number of senior positions that are jointly held by two executives, at least temporarily. Analysts said the shared responsibility is likely a response to the trading losses, which came from the bank's Chief Investment Office.

"What happened in the CIO office was that there weren't enough people taking a close enough look," said Richard Bove, an equities analyst at Rochdale Securities. "That was a lesson for every division in the company."

It is at least the third management reshuffle in as many years for the bank. In a June 2011 shake-up, reporting lines were streamlined. Dimon has said he likes to move promising executives around to give them experience in different parts of the bank, a technique popularized by Jack Welch when he was CEO of General Electric Co .

The shifts can be risky for executives.

Jes Staley, 55, heads JPMorgan's investment bank and has led its asset management and private banking arms. In the latest reshuffle, he was made chairman of the commercial and investment bank, a new position that on Wall Street often signals a more ambassadorial role rather than a hands-on management job.

Analysts scrutinize such executive changes with the intensity that Kremlinologists used to devote to May Day parade photos from Moscow, where the positions of Soviet officials hinted at who was on the way up or down.

Prior shifts at JPMorgan made Cavanagh appear to have dropped in rank, analysts said - he was moved from chief financial officer to head of Treasury and Securities Services, a business that moves money around the world for big clients like multinational companies. That business generates stable revenue, but running it is not usually seen on Wall Street as requiring tremendous management acumen.

But in May, Cavanagh was put in charge of a group that oversaw the bank's response to losses in the CIO. He will now oversee corporate and investment banking businesses such as lending and merger advisory.

Cavanagh is a longtime prot?g? of Dimon. When Dimon was president of Citigroup , Cavanagh was chief administrative officer.

In 2000, Cavanagh followed Dimon to Banc One Corp as head of strategy and planning when Dimon became the bank's CEO.

Pinto, who heads JPMorgan's business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as its global fixed-income business, will oversee all trading operations. He will remain based in London.

SMITH'S PORTFOLIO GROWS

Gordon Smith, 53, will have mortgage lending and retail banking added to his remit, giving him oversight of all consumer banking businesses.

Smith, a former American Express Co executive, currently oversees credit cards and auto lending, and some analysts view him as a possible successor to Dimon. He is a little younger than Dimon but a little older than executives such as Cavanagh and Pinto.

For now, Smith will run the consumer banking business together with Todd Maclin, 56. But in 2013, Maclin will become a chairman of the consumer business.

Frank Bisignano, 52, who was put in charge of overhauling the mortgage business last year, in addition to his role as chief administrative officer of the bank, will become co-chief operating officer of JPMorgan as Smith takes on the mortgage business.

Bisignano will share the COO post with Zames, who will remain head of the CIO and Mortgage Capital Markets.

In May, Zames was put in direct charge of the CIO. He has been unwinding the money-losing portfolio and overhauling the office. He will continue to run the CIO in his new post.

There?s not much middle ground between the Jaguars and running back Maurice Jones-Drew.? He wants a new contract, and owner Shad Khan says Jones-Drew isn?t getting one.? To get Jones-Drew into camp, someone will have to blink.

We?ve seen this movie before.? The two sides seem to be completely dug in.? And then there are two possible endings. ? The player tucks tail ?twixt the hamstrings and shows up ? or the owner, G.M., or head coach decide that he?s had enough and just wants the player back.

The primary question is when will that happen?? The secondary question is whether there will be an effort (successful or otherwise) to save face.? For example, Khan could adjust the two remaining years on Jones-Drew?s current deal and claim that the player didn?t actually get a new contract.? For example, Jones-Drew could be given most of the remaining cash on his contract?($4.45 million in 2012, $4.95 million in 2012) this year, the minimum salary next year, and language that voids the contract if he reaches certain performance levels in the coming season.

That way, he?d get more money now, and potentially become a free agent in March.

Regardless, we?re no longer buying the ?honor your contract? argument.? This isn?t a normal contract.? The same system that lets the teams tear up contracts whenever they want also allows the players to take the calculated risk of holding out.? European gamers are warned to get something else to do from Thursday afternoon. Sony's PlayStation Network is set to go offline on that side of the Atlantic starting from 4PM GMT tomorrow, through to 8AM Friday. Maintenance work will pull the PlayStation Store, account management and registration offline for this time, although anyone looking to play online can still do so -- as long as they're signed in to PSN before network... work begins. NBC tops $1 billion in Olympics ad sales

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC said Wednesday that it has topped the $1 billion mark in advertising sales for the Olympic Games beginning this week in London.

That tops the $850 million in ad sales for the Beijing games in 2008 and is the biggest advertising haul ever for an Olympics, NBC said. Advertisers have plenty of options, since NBC Universal is showing some 5,535 hours of the Olympics on NBC, Telemundo, cable affiliates like MSNBC, CNBC and the NBC Sports Group, and online.

The $60 million in digital ad sales triples what the network earned four years ago, said Seth Winter, executive vice president of sales for the NBC Sports Group.

The cost of advertising time per minute on NBC's prime-time broadcast has increased by less than 10 percent, Winter said. That telecast is where NBC gets its most money and biggest audience.

As television audiences continue to fragment, the ability to reach a broad, family audience through special events like the Olympics or Academy Awards gets more valuable.

"Everyone who is on the air or wants to be on the air in the third quarter has to be on the Olympics," Winter said. "If they want to reach the audience they want to reach, we're in the position of having the most enviable platform in all of media."

Two substantial new advertisers are Chobani yogurt and Fruit of the Loom underwear. The electronics sector is also strong, NBC said.

There's no indication about what crossing the $1 billion threshold means to NBC Universal's bottom line. The company, citing the high costs of doing business in London, has said it expects to lose money presenting the coverage.

NBC is still holding back time for advertisers to join once the London games start, Winter said.

In an election year, NBC said President Barack Obama's campaign has spent $6.5 million to buy national ads during the Olympics. Mitt Romney hasn't bought any Olympics ad time, Winter said.

An organization called UnPac.org is starting an online petition to urge NBC not to accept any political advertising from special-interest PACs during the Olympics. Winter said some NBC affiliates have sold some advertising time to PACs but NBC hasn't on a national level to this point.

'The Jeffersons' star Sherman Hemsley dies at 74

Actor Sherman Hemsley, best known for his role as George Jefferson on "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons," has died at the age of 74 of natural causes at his home in El Paso, Texas. TMZ initially reported the news; it was later confirmed by People magazine.

Hemsley got his big break on "All in the Family." His character, the wise-cracking George Jefferson, was so popular, that Hemsley was soon given his own spinoff. "The Jeffersons" ran for 11 years and had one of the best, most beloved theme songs in television history. Following the end of the "Jeffersons" run, Helmsley starred in another sitcom, "Amen," in which he played the paternal Deacon Frye.

Hemsley?s role on ?The Jeffersons? was a landmark. As Entertainment Weekly put it, George Jefferson was the ?first black character presented as an arrogant, intolerant bigot -- the black Archie Bunker -- George was also one of TV?s first upper-income blacks, appearing nearly a decade before 'The Cosby Show' began its own long run.?

In a 2003 interview, Hemsley talked about the history of George Jefferson. When he debuted the character on ?All in the Family,? Hemsley said he was told to act ?pompous and feisty.? While he was off-stage waiting to make his very first entrance on ?All in the Family? (already a huge hit), Hemsley said he thought to himself: ?Should I run? What the heck did I get myself into? Do I know my lines??

Such nervousness was understandable. George Jefferson was a high-profile character. Prior to Hemsley?s casting, George had been mentioned on ?All in the Family? many times. However, the character never actually came on stage, a device that built up a kind of mystery around the role. ?I didn?t know if I was going to be laughed at or laughed with,? Hemsley said.

He got his start on Broadway, where he was noticed by legendary TV producer Norman Lear. It was Lear who convinced Hemsley to take the role of George Jefferson. For better or for worse, Hemsley was associated with the role for the rest of his career. The show ran for more than a decade, but wasn?t given a proper send-off when it went off the air. The cast later put on a stage play that wrapped up the different storylines.

In recent years, Hemsley appeared on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "The Surreal Life," "Family Guy," and "Tyler Perry's House of Payne." He had no wife or children.

AOL reported surprisingly good earnings today.

Thanks to modest declines in revenues and some growth in display advertising, it is closer to being a revenue and profit growth company than it has been since it spun out from Time Warner in 2009.

One big reason for the slower revenue declines is that AOL's most profitable business ? it's dial-up and subscriber business ? shrank less during Q2 than it did during any preceding quarter.

That's important because subscription revenues still account for 33% of AOL's revenues and a vast majority of AOL's very slim profits.

In fact, the best way to think about AOL as a company is that current management is a VC firm/holding company?investing in startups and businesses like Patch and Huffington Post, and it has limited partner, the subscriptions business.

So, how did AOL reduce this "churn"?

One part of the answer is that, eventually, AOL's subscription customer base will shrink to a point where the remaining customers are people who will never switch. They aren't paying attention or just don't care.

But AOL COO (and still acting CFO) Artie Minson gave two others reasons during a conference call this morning:

• AOL has improved the subscription product.
• AOL has gotten better at talking people who want to quit the subscription product out of doing so. ?"Existing customers plus those who call in with a potential cancel intent, we've been able to articulate to them the new value we have put in the product. That has improved saves rate, that has had them sign up for new services. When we do that, we have a drastic reduction in churn."

You may be surprised to learn that many AOL subscribers don't use AOL to get onto the Internet. AOL has several subscription packages for these people.

An expedition to find out what happened to celebrated US pilot Amelia Earhart is returning to Hawaii without the evidence it was looking for.

The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (Tighar) believes Earhart and her navigator crashed on a Pacific island and died soon after.

The $2.2m (?1.4m) expedition was searching for evidence of the wreckage in the waters around Nikumaroro.

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, in 1932.

"This is just sort of the way things are in this world," Tighar president Pat Thrasher said.

"It's not like an Indiana Jones flick where you go through a door and there it is. It's not like that - it's never like that."

Next year Tighar is planning a return voyage to the island, where they believe Earhart may have survived for a short time.

'Nightmare terrain'

The research team collected video and sonar data, and is expected to begin analysing it on the return journey to Hawaii, Ms Thrasher said.

Updates from her husband, Ric Gillespie, who founded Tighar, suggested the search was cut short to five days from 10 because of "nightmare terrain", and accidents with equipment.

On 2 July 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan took off from Papua New Guinea in their Electra 10E aircraft, en route to Howland Island.

Many experts think a navigational error caused the pair to run out of fuel over the sea. They were never seen again.

They were three-quarters of the way through an unprecedented circumnavigation of the globe around the equator.

On 3 July, the USS Colorado departed from Hawaii in search of Earhart and Noonan.

The research team set sail 75 years to the day after search teams went looking for the pair.

Tighar's expedition had the approval of the US state department and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Artefacts that could have belonged to Earhart and Noonan have been found on earlier visits to the island and a photograph of the coast from October 1937 could show a blurred image of part of the plane.

Fayette, Mo. --(Ammoland.com)- The organizers of the Midwest 3-Gun Championships invite you to join the hunt at Fire for Effect Range for the 1st Annual World Zombie Shoot.

This event will challenge the skills of even the most experienced zombie hunter as well as offer a great introduction to 3-Gun shooting for the beginner.

More than six stages will feature zombie and other steel targets for rifle and shotgun and, of course, a costume contest will afford the opportunity to win a .22 Rimfire rifle from CMMG. There will be additional side matches.

What is the World Zombie Shoot?
The concept is simple: safe, competitive fun. The World Zombie Shoot provides a great environment for new shooters to compete in a safe, laid back and fun way. It will also give more seasoned shooters a place to have fun and get some more trigger time. Stages will simulate real Zombie attack situations and even include scenarios involving knives, baseball bats and swords. What can be more fun than that?

The match will be held at CMMG?s Fire for Effect Range near Fayette, MO Oct. 13-14, 2012. The individual portion of the shoot will be held on Saturday the 13th and part of Sunday the 14th. A team competition will be held when the individual part concludes on Sunday.

Who can shoot?
The match is open to any and all legal, living and non-infected person. No alcohol or mind altering drugs are allowed at all prior to or during the match.

Remember, this is a family oriented event so we ask that you refrain from bad language and t-shirts of poor taste. Our Match Director will make the final call on anything questionable.

?Our goal is to offer a challenging and fun competition for all level shooters and reward all participants with some kind of prize, so that our sponsors get the exposure they deserve and competitors all walk away with something,? said Ken Flood, match director.

It only made sense that Roland Martin, host of Washington Watch and a social media aficionado, would use only technology to invite friends to a private dinner party at the Los Angeles home of actress Vanessa Bell Calloway. The ?digital list? of attendees ? culled from Martin?s cell phone ? included Elise Neal, Jesse Williams, Tracey Edmonds, Salli Richardson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tatyana Ali, Judge Greg Mathis, Robinne Lee, Dondre Whitfield, Tanika Ray, Chris Spencer, Jackee Harry, Bill Duke, Sonja Norwood, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, Judge Kevin Ross and a host of entertainment and media executives.

?I grew up in Houston where my family would throw get-togethers just for the fun of it, so this party is what I like to do when I come out to the west coast; I simply do not have enough time to do lunch with everybody,? said Martin. ?There?s no rhyme or reason to it. I simply sent out a text message on Thursday and here we are!?

Guests dined on a gourmet meal prepared completely by Calloway. The menu featured slow roasted chicken, ?Killer Shrimp? in spicy champagne and garlic sauce, Korean BBQ, fried cat fish, coconut rice, potato salad, grilled mixed veggies, and a mixed greens salad with candied pecans and goat cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

Martin thanked Calloway who was gracious enough to open her home and host the party.

?I enjoy hosting people and cooking for family and friends,? said Calloway. ?I?m getting a chance to meet some new people tonight. It has been my pleasure to help Roland celebrate community and fellowship.?
