Is 30 minutes of physical activity enough? | Dr. Marc Tinsley - Health ...

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans say that adults need 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Seriously? You can?t stay healthy by being active 2% of the day.

You can?t even get out of shape in 30 minutes per day. There?s no way that you can get in shape in only 30 minutes per day.

Healthy people have ants in their pants. Humans are designed to move and move often.

We?re finding out that active couch potatoes?(people who are active enough to meet the PA Guidelines but sedentary much of the rest of the day) have just as much risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes as regular couch potatoes.

We need to be active every day, throughout the day.

When you cook sauce or gravy, you can?t stir the pot for 2% of the cooking time and then stop. You have to stir the pot throughout the process.

So if you want to stay healthy, stir the pot and keep moving throughout the day, every day.

Battle for Syria's Aleppo airport intensifies

BEIRUT (AP) ? The battle for Syria's second-largest airport intensified Saturday as government troops tried to reverse recent strategic gains the rebels have made in the northeast in their quest to topple President Bashar Assad.

Assad's forces have been locked in a stalemate with rebels in Aleppo since July when the city, the largest in Syria, became a major battlefield in the 2-year-old conflict the United Nations says has killed at least 70,000 people. For months, rebels have been trying to capture the international airport, which is closed because of the fighting.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group, said the current fighting was focused on a section of a highway linking the airport with Aleppo, the commercial hub of the nation.

The rebels have cut off the highway, which the army has been using to transport troops and supplies to a military base within the airport complex. Rebels have made other advances in the battle for the airport in recent weeks, including overrunning two army bases along the road to the airport.

The rebels also control large swaths of countryside outside Aleppo and whole neighborhoods inside the city, which is carved up into areas controlled by the regime and others held by rebels. Months of heavy street fighting has left whole neighborhoods of the storied city in ruins.

On Friday, regime forces fired three missiles into a rebel-held area in eastern Aleppo, hitting several buildings and killing 37 people, according to the Observatory. Some bodies were recovered from the rubble of apartments flattened in the strike, which apparently involved ground-to-ground missiles.

A similar attack on Tuesday in another impoverished Aleppo neighborhood killed at least 33 people, almost half of them children.

In Damascus, government forces shelled several rebellious suburbs Saturday as part of their efforts to dislodge opposition fighters who have used the towns and villages surrounding the capital as a staging ground for their attempts to push into the center of the city.

Recent rebel advances in the suburbs, combined with the bombings and three straight days of mortar attacks earlier this week, marked the most sustained challenge to the heart of Damascus, the seat of Assad's power.

A suicide car bombing on Thursday near the ruling Baath Party headquarters in central Damascus killed 53 people and wounded more than 200, according to state media. Anti-regime activists put the death toll at 61, which would make it the deadliest bombing of the revolt in the capital.

The different tolls could not be reconciled.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack. Car bombs and suicide attacks have been a hallmark of Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamic militant group that is one of the myriad factions fighting on the rebel side. Nusra fighters, the most effective group on the battlefield, have led assaults on military installations and control swaths of territory in the north, including parts of Aleppo.

The fighting has increasingly taken on sectarian overtones with members of Syria's Sunni Muslim majority dominating the rebel ranks, who are fighting Assad's regime that is mostly made up of Alawites, an offshoot Shiite group.

Efforts to stop the bloodshed in Syria so far have failed, leaving the international community at a loss of how to end the civil war.

Russia, one of Assad's closest allies, and the Arab League proposed on Wednesday to broker talks between the Syrian opposition and Assad's regime. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem will lead a delegation to Moscow on Monday, and Russia had been expecting a visit in March from opposition leader Mouaz al-Khatib.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Kremlin and the League were trying to establish direct contact between the Syrian regime and the opposition. The Western-backed opposition umbrella group, the Syrian National Coalition, long rejected any talks as long as Assad remains in power.

In a sharp turnaround, al-Khatib said earlier this month he would meet with members of the regime if that would help end the bloodshed. His comments, however, drew pointed criticism from several opposition figures who said al-Khatib spoke for himself, not the group.

On Friday, the Coalition announced after two days of meetings in Cairo that it would welcome U.S. and Russian mediation to negotiate a peace deal to end the country's civil war but insisted it would not allow Assad or members of his security services to participate in the talks.

But the SNC then said in a statement posted on its Facebook page late Friday that its leaders would not travel to Washington or Moscow for any talks. It said the decision was taken to protest the international community's "silence over crimes committed by the regime" against Syrian people in Aleppo and other cities across the country.

The Coalition also lashed out at Russia, saying it bears "special responsibility" because it supplies the regime with weapons.

The statement also said that the opposition leaders would boycott a meeting next month in Rome of the Friends of Syria, which includes the United States and its European allies.

Carnegie head reflects on changes in school's role on 80th ...

Eighty years ago the Carnegie Trade School, now the Carnegie School of Home Economics, opened its doors with the objective of relieving unemployment among women, something that was accomplished in the early stages mainly by making uniforms for postal workers.

Today the school has moved far from that role and has its feet firmly planted in the development of tourism and hospitality sector as it educates women ? and some men ? in domestic science, cosmetology, household management and the visual arts.

The important role the school plays in Guyana?s tourism sector is best illustrated in the words of the Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority Indranauth Haralsingh who in his message to mark the school?s 80th anniversary said?over the years the ?hospitality tapestry in Guyana has been tightly interwoven with the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the training it has imparted.?

She said that it was in the last ten years that the hospitality and tourism sector had been making great demands on the institution to train workers.

20130224carnegie

But the school?s head, Penelope Harris told the Sunday Stabroek in a recent interview that for the school to fully fulfil this role it needs to move from the D?Urban and High Streets location as security and space constraints are two major problems.

Haralsingh said that the constant increase in visitor arrivals including technocrats and North Americans of Guyanese ancestry, has given the school the challenge of satisfying a unique market.

?The institution has to respond to our brand of tourism and focus on areas such as resort management and the passing on of Guyanese culinary skills through edu-tours,? he emphasized.

20130224carnegie1And the Chairman of the school?s board, John Seeram, feels that the time is now right for an intensive review of its programmes to ?ensure that the quality and level of professionalism is in keeping with industry standards.?

Today the school is working towards achieving those goals but Harris said there would be need for major changes even as the school along with other technical and vocational institution works towards granting students Caribbean certification.

?Developing the institution?
?[When the school started] the whole idea was to relieve unemployment among women; it was a successful venture and the then government took over the school and they expanded it? it into doing domestic sciences,? Harris told this newspaper.

While initially the school only made uniforms for postal workers, later all areas of domestic science were included in the curriculum. Later on in the fifties, teacher training started at the school?s location where teachers of home economics were trained at the same time as they attended the Cyril Potter College of Education. They would visit Carnegie two days a week for the practical aspect of the subjects. This was discontinued after the college moved to its Turkyen location.

It was in the last 20 years that the school?s programme expanded to include subjects such as cosmetology, interior decoration and aspects of hospitality.

Penelope Harris

Penelope Harris

?We are in the process of developing the institution further and upgrading it, expanding the programme offering higher level programmes, and we are working towards accreditation so there is a whole lot that is happening right now,? Harris said.

But she admitted that the expansion and improvement are happening ?slower than we would like,? even though there have been ?improvements all around.?

And Carnegie, like the other technical and vocation institutions under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, is moving toward competency-based education and training, which is a ?different mode of delivery to the traditional mode.?

?In the competency based mode there are particular occupational competencies that each student has to achieve. So it is not just that you passed or you failed, you have to show competency in every occupational area in order to be certified,? Harris explained.

She revealed that while it is a national certification it is also a Caribbean qualification. She said all the technical and vocational schools started pilot competence-based education and training from last September. At the school the programmes which are being piloted are cosmetology and commercial food preparation. In addition to these the school offers garment construction, interior decoration, catering and hospitality and visual arts.

By next September they all should be fully on stream as Harris noted that it is during the pilot they would attempt to iron out all the difficulties even though ?it calls for a little more meticulous record-keeping because each student has to display each competence.? Every occupational area may have about 20 competencies and as such this requires a lot of record- keeping and tracking of students.

Harris said that the students have to sign an agreement at the beginning of their programme to complete the competencies.

?It is a lot of monitoring but we are getting there. I think our biggest obstacle or difficulty with that programme is the facility standard, because our facility is supposed to be on par with the rest of the Caribbean and we have some difficulties attaining those standards,? Harris said.

Asked what the school is lacking she responded that there is need for equipment and more space since there are specific requirements as to how much space each student should have to operate in. They also have to have adequate toilet facilities and drinking water, among other things.

?We are working on them; this year we are scheduled to buy quite a bit of equipment from our capital budget and we have been expanding the facility,? Harris said, adding however, that there are two new training rooms which are still under construction.

The qualification is called the Carib-bean Vocation Qualification (CVQ) and at the national level it is called the National Vocation Qualification (NVQ).

Relocation

And for the school to really thrive in the area of hospitality and tourism Harris said that it has to be relocated.

?Certainly in the area of hospitality and tourism, if we are going to do that type of training it is expedient or it is the best thing for us to actually be in an attractive location for tourists?? Harris said.

She said most training schools in the regions not only offer catering services, which Carnegie does, but they also offer lodging facilities and this service the school is unable to offer.

?Security becomes a big issue for tourists and this area is not very attractive where this is concerned, but we are hoping to have an attractive location where that training can be adequately carried out,? Harris said.

It is hoped that this will be done in the medium or short term as the demands are very great since the hospitality industry in Guyana ?is about to take off ? I wouldn?t say it has taken off.? She said there are many business persons who are looking at the school to provide trained staff, and for this to be done adequately they need to have adequate facilities. She hopes that the private sector would give support and that the government would take the initiative as soon as possible.

?In fact we are hoping that in this year?s budget we would get something positive in terms of the hospitality training because the request has been made,? she said.

And several areas have been suggested for relocating the school, and Harris is confident that land is available to build a new school.

Carnegie receives a lot of requests from industries to train persons who are already employed, because while they may have competencies they are not certified. And the school?s head said this is where the competency-based training would work well as it takes prior learning into consideration. She said for many craftsmen and women who are already on the job market ? and this is throughout the Caribbean ? the gaps may be found in their communication, literacy and computer skills, which are all areas that have to be completed for one to be granted full certification.

Concerned
The basic qualification to enter Carnegie is four CSEC subjects, but there are exceptions for adult persons who are already working in the industry. The school does not have many problems with them since they are usually committed to becoming certified.

There is also space for students who have dropped out of secondary school, but they would have first to write an entrance examination (at Grade 9 level). They are interviewed and then are taken through a one-year house management programme before they are placed in the vocational programme.

Sadly, Harris said they only accept about 40% of those persons that take the entrance examination since ?unfortunately the pass rate of the entrance test is very low and it is not only here, it seems to be a national problem.?

?We are very concerned about this; we believe that education needs to be looked at from the nursery level right up, because it is very sad that so many people would drop out of school. The drop rate in secondary school is very, very high,? she said.

While it does not directly concern the school, she expressed herself personally worried about what happens to those young drop-outs when they do not gain entrance to an institution. All the technical and vocational schools have an entrance requirement.

However, she said the Ministry of Education has begun to address the problem with the secondary competency programme and once the student is successful at this they will then gain entrance to a technical institution.

?For a lot of students it provides a motivation for them to remain in secondary school, so that is helping. But it seems not to be enough,? Harris said, adding that the school encourages its students who have not written CSEC to do this, as some persons are late developers.

The school once offered the examination but this has been discontinued. However, Harris said that once they have the facilities and teachers it would be possible for students to sit the examination.

Harris practically grew up at the school since her mother was pregnant with her while working at the school, and she would tell you that she ?grow up running around the school.? She has been at the school for 20 years and has acted as the head since 2007, but was appointed to the substantive position last year. She is a trained teacher and has also studied in Poland where she majored in human nutrition. It was upon her return from there that she joined Carnegie, never imagining she would have been there this long.

?But it brings me a lot of satisfaction, especially when children return, those who might be living overseas and doing well, they return and say they are so glad that they came here and it made all the differences in their lives ? that really motivates me,? Harris said.

The school was first headed by British born B Bryant who was followed by Lucille Fraser, Magda Pollard, Lynette Sylvester, Aulene Kilkelly, Roxanne Benjamin-Hoppie and Norma Washington.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The brother of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a culpable homicide charge for a 2008 road death, compounding problems for the family after the double-amputee runner was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Lawyer Kenny Oldwage said in a statement that Carl had been involved in a car accident "in which a woman motorcyclist sadly lost her life." He said that "there is no doubt that Carl is innocent and the charge will be challenged in court."

Carl Pistorius was already in court last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing, and will appear again at the end of next month.

Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Friday and his brother Carl was seen driving into the home of their uncle Arnold early Sunday in Waterkloof, an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the nation's capital, where Oscar is now staying.

The problems surrounding his older brother Carl are the latest twist in a case that has transfixed South Africa and much of the world. Sunday's revelation of the culpable homicide charge immediately created a stir.

"It's also doubly sad because it's involved with Oscar and his brother and all the family ? so they have double sort of trouble. So, not good," said Johannesburg resident Jim Plester.

Oldwage said that "Carl deeply regrets the accident" and that a blood test showed he was not drunk at the time. "It was a tragic road accident after the deceased collided with Carl's car."

He said the charges had initially been dropped, only to be reinstated later.

Oscar Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder, but the athlete says he killed his girlfriend accidentally, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

On Saturday, the family took steps to lower its profile on social media after someone hacked into the Twitter account of Carl. They cancelled all the social media sites for both Oscar's brother and his sister Aimee.

Carl has always been close to Oscar but was notably absent when their uncle Arnold, flanked by Oscar's sister Aimee, read out a first reaction to the shooting on Feb. 17, even though he was also on the premises.

The three-story house where Pistorius is staying with his aunt and uncle sits on a hill with a sweeping view of Pretoria. It has a large swimming pool and an immaculate garden.

The character of Pistorius also continued to take center stage. For many, it mirrors his public appearances as an articulate, well-spoken advocate for Paralympic athletes facing hardship. Witness statements backing up Oscar Pistorius as a down-to-earth guy were presented at the hearing.

Others have described him as a reckless risk taker who has been in trouble before, such as a boat accident in 2009 which put him into hospital intensive care unit.

On Sunday, a South African man who said Steenkamp had stayed at his home since September, described Pistorius as moody and impatient. Cecil Myers, whose daughter was close friends with Steenkamp, said in an interview published Sunday in the City Press newspaper, that Pistorius will have the killing of Steenkamp on his conscience. "I hope he gets a long sentence. Gets what he deserves," said Myers.

"Very nice and charming to us when they started dating," said Myers. Myers said Pistorius initially used to come into the house but later just dropped Steenkamp off and picked her up when they began to date steadily, and he described the change as a lack of respect.

Myers recalled their first date and told the newspaper: "After that he wouldn't leave her alone. He kept pestering her, phoning and phoning and phoning her."

According to Myers, Steenkamp "told me he pushed her a bit into a corner. She felt caged in."

Myers said he told Pistorius "not to force himself on her. Back off." He said that after initially agreeing with him, it appeared that Pistorius soon took no heed.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect and his legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medalist, and won a silver medal at the 2011 Daegu world championships with South Africa's 4x400 relay team. But he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meter race and the 4x400 relay race.

Cornell scientists 3D print ears with help from rat tails and cow ears

Science! A team of bioengineers and physicians over at Cornell University recently detailed their work to 3D print lifelike ears that may be used to treat birth defects like microtia and assist those who have lost or damaged an ear due to an accident or cancer. The product, which is, "practically identical to the human ear," according to the school, was created using 3D printing and gels made from living cells -- collagen was gathered from rat tails and cartilage cells were taken from cow's ears. The whole process is quite quick, according to associate professor Lawrence Bonassar, who co-authored the report on the matter,

"It takes half a day to design the mold, a day or so to print it, 30 minutes to inject the gel, and we can remove the ear 15 minutes later. We trim the ear and then let it culture for several days in nourishing cell culture media before it is implanted."

The team is looking to implant the first ear in around three years, if all goes well.

The new HTC One is causing some excitement -- head on in to the new HTC One Forums to join in -- and gradually we're getting more concrete release information for various territories. One carrier in the UK picking it up is Three, and today we know when it's coming and how much it will cost.

The One will be available to pre-order from Three beginning today, ahead of general release on Mar. 15. Three is marketing the One as compatible with its Ultrafast network, although this isn't surprising and will work on the carriers LTE network when it launches. Two tariffs are mentioned specifically, both with an upfront cost of £69 for the device. On the Ultimate Internet 500 tariff you're looking at £34 a month, but for just £2 more you can get the HTC One on The One Plan -- a whole lot of One -- which gives tethering along with unlimited data. Additionally, Three is selling the phone on pay-as-you-go for £479.99. You can pre-order one for yourselves at the source link below.

NBA picks are one of our specialties here at Cappers Info, and we are set to make our free Miami Heat @ Chicago Bulls picks and predictions for what should be a great clash on Thursday night at United Center.

Free NBA Picks: Miami Heat @ Chicago Bulls
Date: Thursday, February 21st, 8:00 ET
Location: United Center, Chicago, IL
NBA Betting Odds: Miami -3.5
Heat @ Bulls On TV Live: TNT

The Bulls have really found ways to limit Miami?s offensive production in virtually every game that they have played over the course of the last couple of years, and that has frustrated the heck out of the Heat. LeBron James and Co. have only covered one of the last five games in this series and have only won two of the five SU, both of which have come at home. In fact, the Heat haven?t won a game at the United Center since the end of the playoff series that the two played in 2011. As long as the Bulls don?t tear their team apart at the trade deadline today, they should be alright in this game. F Luol Deng does a nice job of defending James, and the rest of the bigs like F Carlos Boozer and C Joakim Noah are waiting in the paint in the event that anyone else gets in there. The Bulls have allowed just a total of 158 points in their last two games, and we think that they are going to win this one tonight with a strong defensive effort against one of the best teams that the NBA has to offer.

Heat @ Bulls Pick: Chicago Bulls +3.5
Heat @ Bulls Final Score Prediction: Bulls 88 ? Heat 84

McCain claims ?massive cover-up? on Benghazi

(NBC)

While discussing the contentious confirmation hearings for defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel, things got a bit heated on Sunday's "Meet The Press" when Sen. John McCain referred to the lack of information from the White House surrounding the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi as a "massive cover-up."

"There are so many answers we don't know," McCain told host David Gregory. "We've had two movies about getting bin Laden and we don't even know who the people were who were evacuated from the consulate the day after the [Benghazi] attack. So there are many, many questions. So we've had a massive cover-up on the part of the administration."

Gregory then pressed McCain on what the Arizona senator meant by "a massive cover-up."

"I'm asking you, do you care whether four Americans died?" McCain said. "And shouldn't people be held accountable for the fact that four Americans died?"

"Well, what you said was the cover-up--a cover-up of what?" Gregory asked.

"Of the information concerning the deaths of four brave Americans," McCain replied. "The information has not been forthcoming. You obviously believe that it has. I know that it hasn't. And I'll be glad to send you a list of the questions that have not been answered, including 'What did the president do and who did he talk to the night of the attack on Benghazi?'"

McCain continued: "Why did the president for two weeks, for two weeks during the heat of the campaign continue to say he didn't know whether it was a terrorist attack or not? Is it because it interfered with the line 'Al Qaeda has [been] decimated'? And 'everything's fine in that in that part of the world'? Maybe. We don't know. But we need the answers. Then we'll reach conclusions. But we have not received the answers. And that's a fact."

Earlier, the former Republican presidential nominee said he expects Hagel to be confirmed as defense secretary even though he doesn't plan to vote for him.

"I don't believe he is qualified," McCain said. "But I don't believe that we should hold up his nomination any further."

Our Worth? campaign with a fashion panel discussion on fair trade and supply chain transparency at the Women?s Wear Daily Magic Tradeshow, to be held February 20, 2013, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 2013 segment of the campaign aims to address the entire fashion industry.

worthwearingFashion bloggers and other socially responsible and fair trade brands are invited to participate in a dialogue to determine ways in which the fashion industry can spread fair trade and organic practices to the global supply chain.

The Our World Our Worth campaign was launched in 2012, by the California based organic and fair trade fashion pioneer INDIGENOUS. On the 2012 stage of the campaign, INDIGENOUS used social media and blogger relations and a unique QR code on every garment to connect consumers with the artisans who hand-make INDIGENOUS fashion.

?We want every fashion consumer to be a conscious consumer, one who takes the time to know who made her clothes and how her purchase affects the artisans? life. We hope that our collaborations here with other brands and fashion bloggers will bring further attention to the importance of the ethical supply chain,? said Scott Leonard, co-founder and CEO of INDIGENOUS.

Following the Women?s Wear Daily Magic panel, the discussion will be open to the public, with a Tweet-Chat scheduled for March 5, 2013. All are welcome to join the discussion by following INDIGENOUS on Twitter @INDIGENOUS and using the #WorthWearing hash tag to participate in the conversation. The Tweet-Chat aims to extend the dialogue to the general national and international public. It will be hosted by CSRwire and will feature INDIGENOUS and other socially conscious brands on the topic of fair trade and organic fashion.

?This is the age of fair trade and organic and this is the decade when the supply chain will be transformed. Major brands like Eileen Fisher are collaborating with us at INDIGENOUS to do what is right for artisans and workers in the fashion supply chain. However, a lot of brands are still on the sidelines. Now is the time to join the conversation, to stand out and be counted as those who seek fair and just industry practices,? said Matt Reynolds, co-founder and President of INDIGENOUS.

INDIGENOUS is considered a true pioneer in premium eco-sensitive and socially-conscious apparel. INDIGENOUS has provided organic and fair-trade quality clothing since 1994, and has established itself as the first name premium eco fashion, employing over 1,500 highly skilled artisans in knitting groups and cooperatives. The INDIGENOUS collection is available through 700 premium specialty boutiques nationwide. Learn more at www.indigenousdesigns.com or www.facebook.com/indigenousdesigns.

Exclusive: Big powers to offer easing gold sanctions at Iran nuclear talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major powers plan to offer to ease sanctions barring trade in gold and other precious metals with Iran in return for Iranian steps to shut down the nation's newly expanded Fordow uranium enrichment plant, Western officials said on Friday.

The officials said the offer is to be presented to Iran at February 26 talks in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and they acknowledged that it represents a relatively modest update to proposals that the six major powers put forward last year.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials said their decision not to make a dramatically new offer in part reflected skepticism that Iran is ready to make a deal ahead of its June 14 presidential election.

The group, which includes Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - and is known as the P5+1 - wants Iran to do more to prove that its nuclear program is for only non-military purposes and to permit wider U.N. inspections.

Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons but has refused, in recent years, to halt its uranium enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for nuclear reactors or, ultimately, for bombs.

Israel, which is regarded as the Middle East's only nuclear power and which views a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat, has raised the possibility of taking military action to halt the Iranian atomic program.

While stressing he wants to resolve the dispute with Iran through diplomacy, U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday repeated a veiled military threat, saying "we will do what is necessary to prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon."

EXPANSION

The core of the new offer revises last year's demand that Iran stop producing higher-grade uranium, ship any stockpiles out of the country and close down its underground enrichment facility at Fordow, near the holy Iranian city of Qom.

"The next proposal is remarkably close to the old one," said one official who spoke on condition of anonymity, describing it as "a way to test whether they are serious or not."

"We don't think the Iranians have given us reason to do much more," he said. "It's basically an update ... so it does require a little bit more from Iran in terms of cooperation with the (International Atomic Energy Agency) and at Fordow."

According to the IAEA's November report, Iran has increased the number of centrifuges at Fordow, an underground plant that could be largely impervious to attack from the air, by 644 to 2,784 since mid-August.

It has been enriching uranium at Fordow with one quarter of the total, or 696, centrifuges. Western diplomats say Iran is technically ready to sharply expand enrichment at Fordow but that, as of last week, it was not believed to have done so.

In further defiance of international demands that it scale back uranium enrichment, Iran this week said it was installing advanced enrichment machines at its main plant at Natanz, adding to Western worries it may be able to refine uranium even faster.

According to an IAEA report released in mid-November, Iran has a stockpile of 134.9 kg of 20 percent enriched uranium, bringing it closer to the ability to produce the 90 percent uranium needed to provide fissile material for atomic bombs.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last year said Iran must not be allowed to amass enough enriched uranium for a single weapon, suggesting it would do so by the spring or summer of 2013 and implying a decision on whether to use military force against Iranian nuclear sites would have to be made by then.

Western officials said their new demands take into account the advances at Fordow as well as their desire that Iran cooperate more broadly with the IAEA, the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

While declining to provide exact details on what the P5+1 members would demand of Iran, a second Western official said the group wanted the steps to "build in buffer time" to ensure that it would take Iran "more time to restart Fordow."

"We use very careful wording such as 'decreasing readiness of Fordow'. These are face-saving words," this official said.

EASING PRECIOUS METALS SANCTIONS

The added inducement for Iran in the new offer is to suspend sanctions on trade in gold and precious metals, something that could be used as part of barter transactions that might allow Iran to circumvent increasingly tight financial sanctions.

It goes beyond last year's proposal, in which the powers offered sanctions relief on aviation spare parts, fuel for a medical reactor and other civil nuclear cooperation.

The Western officials described their new proposal as "more for more" - meaning that they are seeking more steps to curtail Iran's nuclear program in exchange for greater inducements on their part, but they admitted it is not a dramatic shift.

"It's still more for more, (but) not much more," said the second Western official.

Iran has so far been unwilling to embrace any of the P5+1's offers, including one made in October 2009 under which Iran would ship out much of its enriched uranium in exchange for fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor that produces medical isotopes.

The United States and the European Union have over the last 14 months put in place increasingly tough sanctions on Iran that directly target its lifeline oil industry.

The EU last year imposed an embargo on its members buying Iranian crude, while the United States moved to force other nations to curtail their oil imports from Iran with the threat of cutting off their banks from the U.S. financial system.

In a step to close a loophole under which third countries could barter for oil, U.S. President Barack Obama last July signed an executive order that would allow him to penalize any company that helped Iran acquire gold or other precious metals.

Any companies that did so could have their assets under U.S. jurisdiction frozen and be denied access to the U.S. financial system, a powerful deterrent to any bank or trading company.

The European Union bars trade in gold, precious metals and diamonds with Iranian public bodies and with the central bank.

The Western officials declined to specify precisely how the United States and European Union might ease such sanctions.

It is unclear whether the Iranians would find such an offer appealing or even the basis for further talks, or whether they might hold out for a much more comprehensive offer that the P5+1 do not, at present, appear ready to put on the table.

"It's not the crown jewel," said one Western official of the sanctions relief now on offer.

?

Objective

The Slam Dunk Contest is changing slightly this year, as the Eastern Conference is squaring off against the West throughout the four different events on All-Star Saturday Night.

With the Slam Dunk Contest happening last, it?s likely going to be the most important of the night. Competitors on both sides will be looking to finish their flushes and help their teams' charity win a ton of money from State Farm by being crowned the All-Star Saturday Night Champion.

After the first round, the top scorer from the East will face the Western Conference?s dunker with the highest point total in the first round. The player with the lowest Round 1 score will go first and a winner will be crowned after the two go head to head in the finals.

?

Voting

Fans pick the winners by voting for the best dunks in four different ways during the competition.

?

1) Text: Send the player?s last name to 38657 (DUNKS)

2) Tweet: Tweet #SpriteSlam with the player?s last name

3) All-Star App: Vote via official app, available on iTunes, Google Play and NBA?s site

4) NBA.com: Log in and vote on your computer or phone

?

Prediction

With so many great dunkers, it isn?t easy to narrow it down to just one winner, but we?re about to give it an honest shot.

    Who will win?

  • White

  • Ross

  • Green

  • Bledsoe

  • Evans

  • Faried

For the Eastern Conference, we feel that James ?Flight? White is going to have no problem soaring to the finals, as the 30-year-old journeyman has been a highlight-reel sensation since high school and was born for this competition.

White has performed in various dunk contests and thrown down some of the sickest jams ever caught on tape, but he has never been featured on this grand of a stage before.

We don't expect the veteran to disappoint come Saturday.

As for the West?s representative in the final round, we like Eric Bledsoe. Chris Paul?s backup has taken the league by storm and has an innate advantage in this competition.

Because he stands at just 6?1?, 195 pounds, practically any highly athletic dunk he does is going to look absolutely filthy.

For fans watching at home, the Clippers point guard is going to be easy to vote for, as it will appear he?s floating through the air to finish his flushes.

When it comes to the finals, however, the pure artistry of White is should win out in the end.

We feel the Knicks swingman has too much up his sleeve from years of practice and attempts. Bledsoe will garner a lot of votes, but the third-year man out of Kentucky falls just short of victory after White shocks the world with a never-before-seen jam.

Flu outbreaks modeled by new study of classroom schedules

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Classroom rosters combined with human-networking theory may give a clearer picture of just how infectious diseases such as influenza can spread through a closed group of people, and even through populations at large. Using high-school schedule data for a community of students, teachers, and staff, Penn State University's Marcel Salath?, an assistant professor of biology, and Timo Smieszek, a post-doctoral researcher, have developed a low-cost but effective method to determine how to focus disease-control strategies based on which individuals are most likely to spread the infection.

The results of the study are being highlighted this week as an "Editor's Pick" in BioMed Central's open-access online journal BMC Medicine. The journal also is publishing a commentary on the study written by Gerardo Chowell, a member of the editorial board of BMC Medicine and an associate professor at Arizona State University, and Cecile Viboud. Both Chowell and Viboud are Epidemiology and Population Studies researchers at the U. S. National Institutes of Health.

The team's new findings build on earlier research in Salath?'s lab addressing the challenge of counting the number of disease-spreading, face-to-face interactions within a closed group of people. "Theoretically, we know that people come into contact with many other people, that interactions vary in length, and that each contact is an opportunity for a disease to spread via small droplets that spread from the nose or mouth of one individual to another," Salath? said. "But it's very tedious and unreliable to ask people, 'How many different people have you been in contact with today, and for how long?' We knew we had to figure out the number of person-to-person contacts systematically."

In a 2010 research study, Salath? and his team asked volunteers at a high school to spend one school day wearing matchbox-sized sensor devices -- called motes -- on lanyards around their necks. Like a cell phone, each mote was equipped with its own unique tracking number, and each mote was programmed to send and receive radio signals at 20-second intervals to record the presence of other nearby motes. Volunteers then were asked to simply go about their day by attending classes, walking through the halls, and chatting with other people. At the end of the day, Salath?'s team collected the motes and recorded how many mote-to-mote interactions had occurred, and how long each interaction had lasted.

Now, in their new study, Salath? and Smieszek have studied and recorded possible disease-spreading interactions with a different system. "Using motes is expensive and tedious," Smieszek explained. "We knew that for larger-scale and more-numerous studies to be feasible in the real world, we had to find a simpler way to get data about how people in communities interact. That's where classroom schedules came in." The team members gathered data from classroom rosters and formulated a "collocation rank" -- the cumulative time each individual is potentially exposed to other individuals -- for all students, teachers, and staff members at a high school. These collocation ranks were calculated from information about each class taught at the school -- which teacher taught the class, the room in which the class was taught, the period of the class, and the number of students who were enrolled in the class. "As you might expect, students had many more potential exposures than teachers, while janitors and office workers, who tend to work alone without many close interactions, had even fewer," Smieszek said.

The team members then compared their new classroom-schedule data to a computer model they had developed from the earlier motes study. Salath? explained that the motes study can serve as a highly reliable model of real-world interactions against which other data-collection methods can be compared for accuracy. "Data from the motes were collected systematically; all face-to-face interactions and the length of those interactions were recorded," Salath? said. "On the other hand, classroom data is somewhat fuzzier because it doesn't provide any information about between-class interactions, bathroom breaks, and possible absences. However, we found that when we compared results from the two data-collection systems, the difference was minimal. In other words, we have shown that classroom schedules can paint a fairly accurate picture of the frequency of person-to-person interactions, of which individuals have the most person-to-person contacts, and of the likelihood that disease will spread in the event of an outbreak."

Salath? and Smieszek hope that the classroom-schedule method of studying infectious-disease networks can be used in a number of ways. For example, if health officials need to ration limited doses of a new vaccine, schedule data could be used to determine which individuals have the most disease-spreading interactions. In addition, health officials could use information about more-susceptible individuals to target campaigns that raise awareness about vaccinations. "Ideally, all individuals should be vaccinated against an infectious disease," Salath? said. "But 100 percent vaccination is often not realistic, so we instead rely on 'herd immunity' -- a population-level immunity that occurs when a critical mass has been vaccinated." The team members also hope that a similar system could be developed to study other disease networks; for example, universities, workplaces, or even communities at large.

"One of the major obstacles for researchers studying the spread of infectious disease is figuring out how to determine how networks are structured and which are the highest-risk individuals," Smieszek added. "Methods that rely on network information that can be gathered with motes or surveys are expensive and involve a lot of coordination of volunteers. Our method is both cheap and simple, and is reliable and reflective of real patterns."

The research was funded by a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a Branco Weiss Fellowship, and the National Science Foundation.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Millions of people have watched Maggie Smith on "Downton Abbey." But she's not one of them.

The 78-year-old actress, who portrays Lady Grantham in the popular PBS series, told "60 Minutes" that she hasn't watched the drama because doing so would only make her agonize over her performance. She said she may watch it someday.

Smith told Steve Kroft, in an interview to be televised Sunday, that what she takes from the role is "the delight of acting."

She has three Oscars, two Emmys and a Tony Award, but said the "Downton Abbey" role has given her more public recognition than anything in her career.

'A Defense Of Comic Sans': Vsauce Gives History Of The World's Most Hated Font (VIDEO)

Vincent Connare created Comic Sans in 1994, and it has been many in typographer and graphic designer's nightmares since then. The popular sans-serif typeface lacks intellectual heft, and has been referred to as "a malformed, pathetic excuse for a font." There are even communities who want to eliminate the offending typeface altogether. Video blogger Michael Stevens may stand alone, yet he almost convinces us of the font's value in his short video, "A Defense of Comic Sans."

This is but one of many videos investigating life's queries on Vsauce. It's easy to liken him to lovable nerds like Bill Nye The Science Guy with segments like "Can We Taxidermy Humans?" and "Is the Five Second Rule True?" In the video above, Stevens argues the much-hated font actually represents a turning point in typeface history. Tracing the history of fonts from medieval scrolls to the advent of Microsoft, he claims that Comic Sans is evidence that typography, once a specialized artform, is now accesible to everyone. If typeface is "fashion for letters," as Stevens says, it is not Comic Sans's fault if we have the bad taste to use it for undignified documents like divorce papers.

Check out the rest of the video above to find where "lower case" and "upper case" came from -- hint: it has to do with where letter stamps were stored -- as well as other awesomely nerdy typography facts. And read Mike Lacher's hilarious defense of the typeface in McSweeney's here.

'Survivor's' new reality: Returning players

By Andy Dehnart, TODAY contributor

"Survivor: Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites" is the 26th season of the CBS reality series, and it is yet another season to feature returning players playing alongside new contestants.

Monty Brinton / CBS

The Bikal Tribe (Favorites) and the Gota Tribe (Fans) are set to compete in "Survivor: Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites."

This is "Survivor's" new reality: returning contestants every season. What began with Stephenie and Bobby Jon's triumphant return for "Survivor: Guatemala," after their tribe was decimated the previous season, has now become routine.

Host and executive producer Jeff Probst told me that the show will feature returning contestants ?as often as possible? because ?our fans like their stars.?

Whether the cast members returning for "Survivor: Caramoan" constitute ?stars? is definitely up for debate. They mostly seem like characters ? from Brandon Hantz to Corinne Kaplan ? though one of last season's strongest players, Malcolm, is among the returnees.

Regardless, "Survivor" is becoming more like ABC's "The Bachelor," which has turned into an ongoing soap opera by bringing back rejected cast members. This makes sense for two reasons.

First, "Survivor" has become harder to cast over the last few years. ?Lynne Spilleman, the show's casting director, told me in the past that the competition was receiving fewer applications, and more of those represented people who just want to be on TV.

As a result, it's resorted to recruiting cast members. That sometimes results in dynamic, interesting characters, and other times just adds to the parade of Southern California model/actor/bartenders.

Also, bringing back cast members means viewers instantly know contestants and love or hate them right from the start. There's no learning curve, though fans of the show can be surprised by their behavior ? for example, Benjamin ?Coach? Wade, who grew as a person and player throughout his three seasons.

However, having returnees every season can be problematic and unfair.

As "Survivor: Caramoan" proves, the returning players are often chosen for their personality, not their game play. Sometimes the two go together, but other times it's just re-introducing an annoyance.

Bringing back people can give someone such as "Caramoan" returnee Francesca, who was the first person voted out of "Survivor: Redemption Island," a chance at actual redemption since she seemed like an interesting player with a lot of potential. Or it can irritate us by giving "Redemption Island's" Phillip Sheppard, aka Special Agent Phillip, a chance to wander around the island in his droopy briefs and annoy viewers before he's inevitably voted out.

Worse, whether new players are starstruck or just grateful to have the knowledge of someone who's been through "Survivor" before, they tend to not vote off returnees. Rob Mariano's "Survivor: Redemption Island" win was deserved, but also appeared to be unnaturally easy. The strategic sea just parted for him and he walked right up and took his $1 million check.

That's an imbalance in a game that otherwise has an even playing field: Young and old, female and male, straight and gay, weak and strong ? all kinds of people have won or made it to that final Tribal Council.

"Survivor" has lasted 26 seasons in part because its combination of social and strategic game works exceptionally well. It has also evolved, shifting its focus from survival to strategy, for example. Returnees are the next chapter in that evolution, and there's no point in fighting it any more, even if that changes the nature of the fight.

"Survivor: Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites" kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. on CBS.

What do you think of having returnees each season? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Pinpointing protein locations

Feb. 12, 2013 ? An innovative technique which pinpoints protein locations and helps researchers unravel the protein's functions has been developed by the researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), researchers who recently moved from MIT to the Ulsan National Institute of Science (UNIST) explain.

Scientist from MIT have now developed a technique that can tag all of the proteins in a particular region of a cell, allowing them to more accurately map those proteins.

"There was no previous high-quality map of the matrix subdomain of mitochondria, and now we have one" said Alice Ting, the Ellen Swallow Richards Associate Professor of Chemistry at MIT. "We're still really far from that goal, but the overarching motivation is to get closer to that goal."

This innovative technique combines the strengths of two existing techniques -- microscopic imaging and mass spectrometry -- to map proteins in a specific cell location and generate a comprehensive list of all the proteins in that area.

In a paper appearing in the Jan. 31 online edition of Science, Rhee and colleagues used the new technique to identify nearly 500 proteins located in the mitochondrial matrix -- the innermost compartment found in mitochondria, which can be thought of as the power houses of the cell where energy is generated. Previous attempts to map the entire set of proteins in the matrix (proteome) yielded a list of only 37 proteins.

Protein labeling

To demonstrate the technique's power, the researchers created a comprehensive list of the proteins found in the mitochondrial matrix. Most of a cell's energy generation takes place in mitochondria, as well as many biosynthetic processes.

Using the new method, the team increased the number of proteins known to be located in the mitochondrial matrix. "There was no previous high-quality map of the matrix subdomain of mitochondria, and now we have one," says Ting, adding that this new wealth of information should help biologists to learn more about the functions of many of those proteins.

Already, the team has found that an enzyme called ppox -- involved in synthesizing heme, the iron-porphyrin complex found in hemoglobin -- is not located where biologists had thought it was. As heme precursors move through the biosynthetic pathway, they are shuttled to different parts of the cell. Finding that ppox is in the matrix means that there must be unknown transporter proteins bringing heme precursors into the matrix, Ting says.

The researchers are now investigating proteins found in another compartment of the mitochondria, the intermembrane space. They are also modifying the chemistry of the labeling system so they can use it for other tasks such as mapping the topology of membrane proteins and detecting specific protein-protein interactions.

The lead scientists of this research are Hyun-Woo Rhee (former MIT postdoc, currently Assistant Professor, School of Nano-Bioscience and Chemical Engineering, UNIST) and Peng Zou, who received a PhD from MIT in 2012.
