Microsoft Rolls Out Windows Phone Update

Windows Phone 7 Nokia

Microsoft is rolling out a new Windows Phone update to clean up some of its mobile operating system glitches.

Microsoft said in a blog post that it is releasing its latest Windows Phone update ? 8107 ? starting this week.

Included in the update are fixes to six issues, such as one that prevents the touchscreen keyboard from disappearing at times when typing a message. In addition, users will now have the option of sending their information to local Wi-Fi hotspots ? this would happen automatically before.

Other tweaks involve a small update to the Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server for email, as well as ones that involve digital certificates and encryption issues. Hautala also noted that Microsoft will no longer be using the site to keep customers informed of update information.

?In the months ahead, we?ll continue to send out firmware and maintenance updates as needed,? said Eric Hautala, General Manager of Customer Experience Engineering for Microsoft. ?These will be available across the globe ? although not everybody will receive or require them. It depends on your country, carrier and phone model. But remember that you?ll never have to guess when a Windows Phone update is waiting: Just watch for the pop up notification on your device.?

This means that carriers would have to request update information to be pushed out to customers: ?The update, available to all carriers that request it, is part of our ongoing maintenance of Windows Phone,? Hautala said.

Microsoft is gearing up for the launch of T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710, which will hit stores in the U.S. this week. Priced at $100 and eligible for a $50 rebate, the device is a compelling option for budget-minded smartphone consumers.
