Israel already passed own nuclear red line: Iran

TEHRAN: Israel has already breached its own red line set by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by acquiring "dozens of nuclear warheads," Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday.

"If having the atomic bomb is passing the red line, the Zionist regime, that possesses dozens of nuclear warheads and weapons of mass destruction, has passed the red line years ago, and it has to be stopped," he said, according to the ISNA news agency.

Vahidi was responding to a speech by Netanyahu to the UN General Assembly this week in which -- using a cartoon bomb diagramme -- the Israeli leader called for a "clear red line" to be applied to Iran's nuclear activities, which he charged are aimed at developing atomic weapons.

"Is the occupying and aggressor Zionist regime that possesses nuclear weapons more dangerous? Or an Iran that doesn't have nuclear weapons and which insists more than anybody on nuclear disarmament, and seeks only to have peaceful nuclear energy abiding by international rules," Vahidi asked.

Israel is the Middle East's sole, though undeclared, nuclear weapons state. Analysts estimate it has more than 200 nuclear warheads.

It is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency but has never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful and rejects Israel's accusations of military intent.

Israel has had serious differences with Washington over how to respond to what it regards an "existential" threat from Tehran.

US intelligence agencies estimate that Iran has taken no decision to acquire a nuclear weapon but is merely seeking a so-called breakout capability to develop one in the future if it so decides.

It says there is more time for diplomacy and sanctions to work out.

Ten Reasons to Actively Oppose Standardized State Tests in Schools

 1. Standardized tests assume that children come standardized, which they don?t. Not only is there a huge developmental span between children in the same grade, but it?s normal and healthyfor there to be a span. They aren?t factory widgets, folks, they are developing humans.
 2. Teachers and administrators hate (if they are honest with themselves) the tests. They know every one of the points in this list. If professional educators don?t like the tests, perhaps they aren?t the best tools for educators to use.
 3. These tests cause a great deal of anxiety in children. It is abusive to force kids to sit for hours filling in the little oval bubbles in high-stakes tests. Often, children are not allowed to go to the bathroom while testing. The atmosphere of the classroom becomes oppressive, which is contrary to best teaching practices.
 4. These tests cause anxiety in teachers, party because they know they are judged by their students? scores, and partially because the tests interfere with teaching. This is an important point: State tests take about a week out of the time teachers have to deliver the curriculum. More tests means less learning.
 5. Tests are causing teachers to teach superficially. Instead of the critical thinking skills that come from investigating something in depth, children are taught to quickly answer questions phrased in test language.
 6. These tests are not good assessments of student learning. They are, by their nature, unauthentic. Take math for example. Do we teach math so that kids will know math, or do we teach math so that kids will have math as a tool to solve problems in life? If the latter is the goal, students should be tested by seeing if they can comparison shop, not if they can compare the angles of geometric shapes.
 7. State tests send a bad message to our children. We should be modeling integrity, standing up for our beliefs. Instead, we are presenting children with the following subtext: We don?t believe in what we are doing but the people in charge tell us to do it so we will follow along like sheep. (I apologize to any sheep who may be reading this.)
 8. The time frame is wack. It takes so long to get the results that these tests can?t be used to inform teaching in the moment. They can only be used to help the next crop of kids do better on tests.
 9. The tests are at variance with Special Education law (IDEA) by forcing students with disabilities to take the same tests as other students.
 10. More and more, standardized tests scores are used to judge and even force teachers out of the profession. Since the tests don?t measure student learning, we may be losing teachers who are good for our kids.

My fear is that our schools are being transformed into testing factories. We will have generation of kids who are really great at taking standardized tests. This won?t help them in life, unless they choose ?Test Tutor? as a profession. Would you like more arguments against standardized testing? Visit Alphie?s Kohn?s article, and this article from Fair and Open Testing.

The Budget Deficits and Municipal Bankruptcies | Finance Buzz ...

The financial markets today no longer look safe for investing in municipal bonds. With the present U.S. economy assailed with a growth in municipal bankruptcies, the problems that continue to plague America are forever on the rise.

Budget deficits should be controlled by the local governments. In addition, further spats with creditors have to be avoided and so there is need for the deficit cuts by the municipalities. When the local government takes the regular steps in order to survive, the municipal bond investors and their invested amount of the tune of $3.7-trillion will be very much affected. The municipal bond defaulters are the cities in California; viz. Vallejo, Mammoth Lakes, Stockton, and San Bernardino. Compton is the next most likely town to follow suit; the reason being that all theses towns are facing the problem of big budget deficits.

During days of healthy financial markets, there is substantial consumer spending. Like for example if one considers Bell, which is a city outside of Los Angles; it is said that in the year 2010, it paid an amount of $800,000 a year to the city managers. (Source: Wall Street Journal, July 18, 2012). Municipalities land in trouble because of cases like this.

On account of being burdened with enormous budget deficits, cities filed for bankruptcy. The chief resources of revenue of the municipal governments are the property taxes, but when such sources are blocked, cities need to search for different means to make revenue for the payment of dues or just show their helplessness in being able to pay the municipal bond investors. Though the plan looks clever enough, i.e. defaulting on the municipal bonds and starting again, it simply does not work. Examples of cities that have already defaulted as mentioned above are Stockton, California and Jefferson County in Alabama.

Stockton, California has pensions to the tune of $26.0 million each year, which it must pay; as a result of which its municipal bond insurers may be badly hit by an amount above $100 million. (Source: The Examiner, September 17, 2012). In 2011, Jefferson County; not being successful in planning its finances to control the budget deficit, had filed for chapter-nine bankruptcy (which gives protection from creditors to municipalities comprising cities, counties, townships and school districts that are financially in doldrums by working towards a plan between them to resolve the outstanding debt). The municipal bond insurers now remain restless that they may stand to lose an amount near about $709 million.

As per reports from Bloomberg, September 10, 2012, Wenatchee, Washington, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Moberly, Missouri have also defaulted on their municipal bonds payments as they did not have the requisite available cash.

Thus it can be clearly seen that there will be bound to be an increase in the number of municipal bankruptcies, which will in turn, hit the municipal bond investor to a large extent. It would be advisable for bond investors to exercise caution while purchasing bonds and not get hooked by endorsements of exemption from taxes.

Brazilian student auctions her virginity over internet - In2EastAfrica ...

Brazilian student Catarina Migliorini, 20, is auctioning her virginity through an Australian producer, as a part of the documentary ?Virgins Wanted?, which tells the story of two young men before and after their first time.

The physical education student will be followed every step of the way by an Australian film crew

She also mentioned that she never had actual boyfriend, and her first kiss happened at age of 17.?The auction ends on October 15th, and then it will take ten more days to organize the place and for the winner to take tests to prove he has no sexually transmitted diseases.

The act will be consummated in the sky, there will be no fantasies, kissing or anything else excerpt taking off girls virginity. They will departure??from Australia to the US, in a bid to circumvent prostitution laws.

D.C. budget bomb restrains job growth

David Cote, Honeywell International chairman & CEO, discusses a series of possible outcomes facing the fiscal cliff dilemma, and gaining control of the Federal budget, with Sam Nunn, Nuclear Threat Initiative CEO.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

It?s Washington, stupid.

Even as the U.S. economy begins to push up ?green shoots? of recovery ? from a housing market bouncing off the bottom to a buoyant stock market ? businesses worried about the deep dysfunction paralyzing the political process have begun to hunker down.

The latest evidence of came from the government's monthly report on orders for so-called durable goods, which plunged in August. Much of the drop came from a cluster of cancelled orders for airplanes, even one of which can have a huge impact on the data.

But the rest of the data pointed to a wider pullback: orders for machinery fell 4.7 percent, computer orders dropped 2.9 percent, and communications equipment orders were down 7.1 percent.?

Economists say worries about what's happening in Washington are behind the pullback.?

?Businesses have become more pessimistic as we approach the fiscal cliff with no resolution in sight,? said Paul Edelstein, an economist at IHS Global Insight.

With a massive "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts set to kick in at year end, Congress and the White House have all but quit trying to break the budget impasse. If the unprecedented belt-tightening takes effect next year, economists believe another U.S. recession would almost certainly begin. On Thursday, Fitch Ratings, which rates corporate and government bonds, warned that unless the budget bomb is defused, world economic growth will be cut in half next year.

Against that backdrop, business confidence has fallen to its lowest point since the third quarter of 2009, according to a survey of American CEOs by the Business Roundtable released this week. Though more than half of those who responded expect their sales to rise over the next six months, about a third said they plan to cut U.S. jobs over that period, up from 20 percent a quarter ago. Just 30 percent plan to boost spending on new equipment, down from 43 percent three months ago.

Until recently, American companies had managed to squeeze out more profits with very little new hiring, largely by getting more work out of the same labor force and by investing in new equipment that lowers costs and boosts output. Slower spending on capital equipment could slow or reverse that trend.?

Job seekers find warm welcome in Plains states

There?s been recent evidence that consumers are feeling more confident, which could help boost the spending category that accounts for 70 percent of the U.S. economy. The Conference Board?s latest monthly survey showed?its confidence index rose by nine points?to 70.3 percent.

But the improvement is relative, according to David Rosenberg, chief economist at Gluskin Sheff.

?It is one thing to say consumers are feeling better (maybe the respondents this time were card-carrying Democrats), another thing to say they?re feeling well. After all, to put 70.3 in perspective, the consumer confidence index averages 78 in recession and 102 in (economic) expansions,? Rosenberg said.

Weak growth ahead
Throughout the year, the economy has been adding jobs.?But the?pace has been too slow to make a significant dent in the unemployment rate, which is stuck above 8 percent some five years after the recession began. That makes this recovery the slowest, by far, of any since World War II.

The latest evidence of that slow growth came Thursday in the government?s final tally of gross domestic product for the second quarter, showing that the economy advanced at a weak 1.3 percent annual rate ? slower than the initial estimate of 1.7 percent.

Roughly half of the revision came from better data on the impact of the Midwest drought, as the level of farm inventories turned out to be less than initially reported. The drought is expected to continue to weigh on GDP growth this year, according to Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight, which expects third quarter GDP growth of just 1.5 percent..

?The economy overall has only weak forward momentum,? he said in a note to clients. ?The news from housing may be improving, but manufacturing is struggling now, because of weakness in exports and business fixed investment."

The latest weekly report on new claims for jobless benefits, seen by some as a bellwether of hiring patterns, fell 26,000 to a two-month low of 359,000. But the results may also indicate that fewer people are eligible for benefits as the weak labor market has forced more workers to take odd jobs or leave the work force altogether.

Despite gradual improvement in the job market, nearly 13 million people are still out of work. The Labor Department said Thursday its latest annual revisions show that it likely undercounted job growth in the 12 months through March by 386,000.

But even with the slight increase, the government?s data show that the economy produced roughly 140,000 new jobs a month since the recession ended in June 2009, or about 5.5 million. That?s far short of the nearly 9 million workers who were sidelined by the recession.. ?

The Fed?s latest effort to boost job growth has targeted the housing market with a plan to buy $40 billion in mortgage bonds every month - until further notice. The move has already nudged mortgage rates down to a new record lows of 3.40 percent this week, sparking another round of home refinancing?s. Those lower monthly mortgage payment swill free up a little more cash for consumers to spend.

But it?s not at all clear when or how pushing mortgage rates lower will create more jobs. That?s why the Fed?s policy makers were not in agreement on the latest move to try to boost growth.

?We are unlikely to see much benefit to growth or to employment from (another round of mortgage bond buying,)? said Charles Plosser, president of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve, in a speech Tuesday. ?Conveying the idea that such action will have a substantive impact on labor markets and the speed of the recovery risks the Fed?s credibility.?

The stock market seems to think better times, or at least continued gains in corporate profits, lie ahead. Market indices are up nearly 13 percent off summer lows, which has added to household wealth.

Homeowners? wealth has also gotten a lift from rising home prices, which have been up for the past six months in a row.

But the wealth hole created by the housing collapse was huge. From a pre-recession peak of $67.4 trillion in the fall of 2007, household wealth plummeted to $51.2 trillion in early 2009. As of the April-June quarter, it's climbed back to $62.7 trillion.

Tempur-Pedic buying Sealy for about $228.6M

(AP) ? Mattress company Tempur-Pedic is buying rival Sealy for about $228.6 million in cash.

Tempur-Pedic International Inc. said Thursday that it will pay $2.20 per Sealy share, which is a 3 percent premium to the company's Wednesday closing price of $2.14.

Sealy, based in Trinity, N.C., currently has about 103.9 million outstanding shares, according to FactSet. Its stock jumped 21 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $2.35 in premarket trading.

Tempur-Pedic says it will also assume or pay back all of Sealy Corp.'s outstanding debt. The Lexington, Ky., company plans to finance the acquisition with debt. Its shares gained $1.32, or 4.9 percent, to $28.10 before the market open.

The companies put the total value of the deal at $1.3 billion, including debt. They say that the transaction will create a $2.7 billion global bedding provider.

"Tempur-Pedic and Sealy together will have products for almost every consumer preference and price point, distribution through all key channels, in-house expertise on most key bedding technologies, and a world-class research and development team," Tempur-Pedic CEO Mark Sarvary said in a statement.

Tempur-Pedic and Sealy will run independently of each other, with Sealy's CEO Larry Rogers remaining in that position. Rogers will report to Sarvary.

Tempur-Pedic, founded in 1992, makes and distributes mattresses and pillows in more than 80 countries under its Tempur and Tempur-Pedic brands. Sealy, founded in 1881, makes mattresses under brands including Stearns & Foster, Sealy and Sealy Posturepedic.

While Tempur-Pedic has a particularly strong presence in North America, Europe and Asia, Sealy has a strong presence in North America, Asia and Argentina. Sealy also has strong brand recognition through its international licensees and joint ventures.

Stockholders with about 51 percent of Sealy's outstanding shares have put forth a written consent approving the deal. No additional shareholder approvals are needed to complete the acquisition.

Both companies' boards have approved the buyout, which is expected to close during 2013's first half.

Annual cost savings for the combined company are expected to be more than $40 million by the third year.

U.S. official sees eventual resumption of Iran nuclear talks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States expects major powers' consultations on Iran's nuclear program to continue and eventually lead to another round of talks with Tehran, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.

The official, speaking after talks among representatives of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - United States, France, Britain, Russia and China - and Germany at the United Nations, said "at some point" the group would likely return for a fourth round of talks with Iran.

"I think we've got some additional work to do first, so I would not expect that to happen immediately, but I would hope that we will get there in the not-too-distant future," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The push comes at a time when tensions between Iran and Israel are rising and diplomatic efforts to resolve the decade-long dispute over Iran's nuclear work have foundered.

Israel, the United States, the European Union and their allies say Iran is amassing the capability to produce a nuclear bomb, an allegation the Islamic Republic denies.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew his "red line" for Iran's nuclear program on Thursday, despite a U.S. refusal to set an ultimatum, saying Tehran will be on the brink of a nuclear weapon in less than a year.

The six world powers, represented by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, have sought to persuade Iran to scale back the enrichment of uranium through intensifying economic sanctions and diplomacy.

They have failed to reach a breakthrough in three rounds of talks since April.

Western sanctions on Iran tightened markedly this year with an EU ban on crude oil purchases from Iran and U.S. sanctions targeting banks that deal with Iran's central bank. However, they have not yielded tangible progress toward a diplomatic solution.

U.N. diplomats say the possibility of further U.N. Security Council sanctions is slim because Russia and China are opposed to the idea. There was no sign the issue was discussed on Thursday.

After the talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Ashton said the powers had discussed the need for Iran to take action urgently regarding its nuclear issue and planned to contact Tehran to continue the process.

"We have to ensure that we aren't going to have talks for talks' sake, and we have some reason to believe that they will move to a point of seriousness, but we will test this out every step of the way," the U.S. official said.

The Emerald Necklace: A Hidden Gem | The Daily Free Press

Hidden beside Boston University?s South Campus, The Emerald Necklace is an accessible and serene place where students seek peace from their busy college lives.

The Emerald Necklace has many greenways to explore, and visitors can find the place that they connect to the most and spend alone time in their special spot.

?The landscape architect of the park, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed the public park in a way that appeals to the greater good of society,? said Christina Luke, a BU professor who teaches a ?Green Design and Cultural Policy? class.

Hit the spots

Popular areas of the Emerald Necklace include Back Bay Fens, Arnold Arboretum, Franklin Park, the Riverway, Jamaica Pond and the Rose Garden.

The Back Bay Fens is adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts and other educational institutions.

?[It] provides a variety of recreational opportunities, from gardening, to concerts, to sports,? according to the Emerald Necklace Parks Map and Guide.

The Arnold Arboretum is one of the world?s leading centers for the study of plants, according to the Map and Guide.

Sports are a prominent part of Franklin Park. ?The Emerald Necklace is a big playground,? said Susan Knight, Director of Development for the Emerald Necklace, in a phone interview. ?I see students out in the park every single day. I see them near Northeastern, playing basketball, doing reading and other schoolwork.?

The Riverway is a narrow park that is adjacent to the Muddy River. Students are seen running through it, along many beautiful bridges.

Jamaica Pond is a popular destination for runners. It is also home to the Boathouse, which offers sailing and row boating.

?I enjoy my experience [at the Emerald Necklace] very much!? said Britta Dosch, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. ?The parks are very well kept and always full of life and activity when I visit. They seem very well utilized by the public.?

Detailed designs

Olmstead?s design plans for the seven-mile stretch of swampy land included parks, ponds, bridges and benches.

?He specifically wanted the park to always be open to the public, to create an oasis for busy city dwellers,? Luke said.

These features attract people into the park from the surrounding neighborhoods and students from other colleges.

?The Emerald Necklace is an attraction to students because it is a linear park,? Knight said.

People in the park

The string of greenery allows students to see into the city, and hints at the potential for integrating nature with the demands of urban life.

Knight said that even today, the park serves its original purpose ? to bridge the gap between citizens and nature.

?The park is 1,100 acres. It runs through all the neighborhoods. Students can gather with friends in the park to get out of hubbub of everyday busy life,? Knight said. ?Research has shown that is critical to disconnect from everyday activities and work obligations.?

People of all ages are seen throughout the Emerald Necklace ? elderly couples sit on benches, basketball players shoot hoops and bikers zoom along the paths.

?It is also a way for students to commute to school,? Knight said. ?A lot of BU students live around the Back Bay Fens area.?

Student discoveries

Despite the lengthy stretch the Emerald Necklace extends, a number of students said they still do not know about its existence.

?I was surprised at the hidden gems, such as the Rose Garden, that are within walking distance from BU that I never knew about,? said Dosch.

Students who live in areas such as Brookline have easy access to the running trails that pass by Leverett Pond and Ward?s Pond and eventually leads to Jamaica Pond.

After Jamaica Pond, the trail turns into the Arborway, which rounds off at Franklin Park.

Students who intentionally visit the Emerald Necklace or stumble upon one of the green spaces in the immediate area said that they are transported to another state of mind.

Nature?s benefits

The Necklace is a place for Boston residents to take part in Olmstead?s vision to experience nature to become healthier and happier.

People are seen out walking their dogs and having picnics. The shade from trees cools down students and local Bostonians after a long run.

In addition to the health benefits provided by the numerous trees, the open greenery allows people to take a moment to step back from the constantly moving lifestyle of Boston and reflect.

The tall trees, walking routes and quiet rivers in the Necklace give students an opportunity to explore the city that they are a part of.

NASA: Let's Build a Space Station on the Far Side of the Moon

Everyone needs something audacious on their wish list. NASA's is a space station not 200 miles about the Earth, as the International Space Station is, but an installation 277,000 miles away, on the far side of the moon.

Over the weekend, the Orlando Sentinel reported that NASA administrator Charles Bolden had briefed the Obama administration on a plan to build such an outpost that would travel to the Earth-moon Lagrange Point 2, or L2. The Lagrange Points are spots in our planet's neighborhood where the gravities of the Earth and the moon cancel each other out. L2 is an ideal spot for a station, since you wouldn't need much energy to hold the thing in place.

Sending astronauts so far from Earth could be a major stepping stone toward sending them further distances, like to Mars. For one thing, building this mission would mean NASA would have to learn how to keep astronauts safe in deep space. An L2 outpost would lie beyond the Earth's protective magnetosphere, putting astronauts in much more danger from radiation and thus required new shielding. And if NASA needed to execute a rescue mission, 277,000 miles is a bit more challenging than 200.

According to the Sentinel, it's unclear whether the president would support such a mission. And like all things NASA, the cost is an enormous issue. There's no clear price tag on an L2 space station, but at the very least it would require NASA to actually build the Space Launch System that would blast its Orion capsule (now called the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle) into orbit. The agency is congressionally mandated to do so, but it's unclear whether the project will ever truly be funded.

Bulls coach a relieved man

Currie Cup

2012-09-23 12:54

Pine Pienaar (Gallo Images)

Pretoria - Blue Bulls coach Pine Pienaar was a relieved man after his side broke a losing spell against the Free State Cheetahs in Pretoria on Saturday.

Pressure was building as Pienaar?s team lost three consecutive matches before the Bulls beat the Bloemfontein side 34-30.

?I didn?t sleep much the whole week and I?m just glad I could get past tonight and I am happy for the players,? Pienaar said after the match.

?The last few weeks was hectic, especially off the field and obviously it is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.?

The Bulls had to overcome a fight-back by the Cheetahs towards the end of the match to bring some relief to the Pretoria-based side.

?The first half we really played well and our defence was really outstanding in the first half,? he said.

?In the second half, you can?t take anything away from the Cheetahs they came out and got a few opportunities and they used that and put us under immense pressure up until 81 minutes.?

The side?s defence has been a source of concern for the Bulls as their opposition easily found gaps in their defensive lines.

The Bulls have in the process dug themselves out of the last place on the Currie Cup log to give themselves a chance at reaching the playoffs.

Pienaar was, however, under no illusions that the team was still far from dishing up a spotless performance.

?I am relieved by the win, I am happy by the way we pitched up defence wise and I know next week will be even tougher,? Pienaar said.

?There are a lot of things we could have done better and that?s what we will have to look for.?

While Pienaar could breathe a sigh of relief, the pressure was building for Cheetahs coach Naka Drotsk? after the side suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

The team - known for their expansive style of play - looked flatfooted in the first half with flyhalf Tewis de Bruyn struggling to get his backline firing.

The introduction of Sias Ebersohn in De Bruyn?s place saw the visitors attacking the line with greater fervour.

?On the positive side we had intensity on attack in the second half which we struggled with over the last two or three games,? Drotsk? said.

?On the negative side the three penalties in the first half was unacceptable which was bad discipline.?

Drotsk? admitted that the inconsistency in his selection at flyhalf played a leading role in the Cheetahs? struggles this season.

?We have a problem on flyhalf there is no doubt about that,? he said.

?Sias lost form earlier in the season, credit to Tewis, it is always easier to come on when you are down 27-9 to try everything out and to try to get the game back.

?So there is no pressure when you come on at that stage.?

The Cheetahs coach acknowledged his team was in an unfavourable position but he felt his side could still make the playoffs.

"There is a huge race for that fourth place in the playoffs between Griquas, the Bulls and ourselves," Drotsk? said.

"Griquas are on 15 points, the Bulls are on 13 and we are on 12 - we are playing the Griquas next week in Bloemfontein and the Bulls are playing the Sharks in Durban.

"So it is a must win for us and there are three games to go and luckily we've got two in Bloemfontein."

Verizon iPhone 5 secret? It works on AT

Verizon iPhone 5 is 'unlocked,' the wireless carrier confirms. Verizon iPhone 5 accepts an AT&T card that allows use of that network, although buyers are typically signing up for two years of Verizon service.?

By Peter Svensson,?AP Technology Writer / September 23, 2012

Aiden Villa, left, waits online to get the first iPhone 5 at the Verizon store in Odessa, Texas, on Friday. The Verizon iPhone 5 is 'unlocked,' which means it can be used on the AT&T network.

The Verizon version of the?iPhone?5, which went on sale Friday, comes with a secret and unexpected feature: it works on AT&T's network as well.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Confirming blog reports, The Associated Press found that the Verizon?iPhone?5 accepts an AT&T "SIM card" ? a little chip that identifies a phone to a wireless network. The phone can then be active on AT&T's network.

It's the first time Verizon?iPhones?have been able to access AT&T's network without complicated hacking procedures. The feature may mean little to most buyers, since they're signing up for two years of Verizon service. But it does give them the option of switching carriers.

It's unclear whether the feature is intended and whether the phones will work with other carriers, such as T-Mobile USA. But Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed Saturday that the?iPhone?5 models it's selling are "unlocked."

Last year, the first shipments of the Sprint?iPhone?4S were unlocked and worked on AT&T, but Sprint later issued software updates that turned off that capability.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Finally Lands Jelly Bean Update

As Alton Brown is fond of saying, "your patience will be rewarded." Today, those of you with Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus handsets (at least those that didn't run out and download an unofficial Jelly Bean) are finally getting your reward. Android version 4.1.1 (better known as JRO03O among the hack happy) is being pushed out OTA to Big Red customers, complete with the preemptive magic of Google Now in tow. If you haven't seen an alert yet, head to the About Phone section in your settings, and tap System Updates. Having recently been welcomed back to the AOSP fold, we'd have hoped for an update sooner, but it's still among the first wave of handsets to move to the latest version of Android. Now if only this would restore Google Wallet functionality. (Hey, a guy can dream can't he?) The complete announcement from Verizon awaits after the break.

Tips of Hearing Aids Styles | Online Health Guide, Fitness Tips

Hearing Reduction can be overwhelming; sometimes the analysis is just the starting of the misunderstandings. There are so many different models, and different guidelines for each kind and design of hearing aid. It can all be just too much. It doesn?t have to be that complex. Here are some guidelines and pointers for the typical styles of hearing aids from Harris Hearing.

1. Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Style

This kind is used over the top of the ear, linked with a pipe that connects to a customized ear item or dome tip in the external ears. It is often the option for kids. This is because, this particular system does not have to be customized fit, and it is the most convenient device to deal with and keep fresh. This system is flexible to almost any kind of the decrease in listening to.

2. In-the-Ear (ITE) Style

This kind of device is also usually simple to deal with. However, it is customized fit to your ear because it suits into the dish of the ear with a device seated in the external ears. This form can either be made into a complete or a 50 percent spend. These are still quite noticeable, and sometimes may cause the person wearing them to feel as though their ear is a little bit linked.

3. In-the-Canal (ITC) Style

The ITC is also customized fit to your ear; it fills up only the very base of the ear container. This design is the tiniest device that can implement more than one mic at the same time to remove disturbance audio. Also simple to deal with, this system is also appropriate for individuals with minimal skill problems. It is best for individuals with less serious the decrease in listening to.

4. Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) Style

This system is customized fit to your external ears. This design doesn?t usually come outfitted with all the functions of the other helps. Its real estate is too small to provide these other elements. Don?t let the appeal alone of this design swing you. It is almost unseen and great for regular use of the phone, but it not very appropriate for those with any kind of more serious the decrease in listening to. Also skill is a big problem with this system. Due to it?s tinniest and its positioning in the ears, this device often needs maintenance. These gadgets are quickly missing or missing, decreased and not discovered, very hard to deal with. Also they are very vulnerable to earwax and other body sebum, which intervene with the devices sensitive inner technicalities.

10 Reasons Why Long-distance Relationships Just Don't Work ...

Beyond the first few months of giddy affection and the feeling of butterflies, few ? if any ? romantic relationships are easy. Sure, some look that way, but usually that?s because two people are putting in a lot of work behind the scenes.

Long-distance relationships are even more difficult to maintain, and the reasons why they can fail are numerous. Many long-distance relationships certainly succeed, but they require careful navigation from the people involved to steer through the obstacles brought on by geography.

Of course, with the right mindset, plenty of emotional preparation and lots of work throughout, long-distance relationships can and do work out. But many potential pitfalls await every hopeful attempt at cross-country love.
10: Communication Breakdown

Couples in long-distance relationships have to make up for a serious lack of face time. In this modern age, there are plenty of alternatives: phone calls, text messages, instant messaging and pretty much any other communication technology developed since the carrier pigeon. However, much of our hasty electronic communications are hammered out in shorthand, and this can easily become the native language of long-distance relationships.

The flip-side of this is that these forms of communication often don?t pay off with a truly fulfilling interaction. Whereas it was once easy to chat in person, now those normal, daily interactions are severely curtailed. It requires real effort to keep in touch and feel connected.

If the relationship began long distance, it might be easier to communicate from afar because that dynamic is the only one that?s existed. If both parties are used to being in one another?s presence, it might become increasingly disheartening to communicate in less personal ways as time goes on.

A relationship can morph into a voice-and-text situation that assumes its own shape, making it somewhat strange when a couple actually spends time together in person after a long absence.

There is one type of person who does well with long-distance communication: the man or woman who truly values his or her own space (and a lot of it), but also wants to nurture a connection with a loved one.
9: A Murky Future

If you and your significant other (S.O.) are in a long-distance relationship, it?s a sign that your lives are different enough that circumstances prevent you from living in same ZIP code, state or even country.

Maybe you just met but don?t know each other well enough to move to the same city. While there?s strong chemistry, both of your lives are chugging along on parallel tracks. You can?t just sell your house, quit your job and move. Or can you? And what if you moved but it didn?t work out? What if he or she moved to your city (or into your home)? Would it be a dream come true or a suffocating nightmare?

Or perhaps you started off together, but circumstances, dreams, desires or conscious decisions created the physical distance now between you. It?s important for a relationship to foster a sense of togetherness, and that the bond has a mutually acceptable sense of stability and momentum. But over time in a long-distance relationship, you may feel as present in your S.O.?s life as you do in the life of the coffee-shop regular you keep bumping into in your own ZIP code ? and you may realize the same could hold true for your S.O.

If further long-term commitments are made by both parties (like a lease extension or acceptance of a big job promotion or transfer), and those commitments don?t bring the two any closer together, someone?s likely to pull the plug.

8: The ZIP Code Rule

The ?ZIP code rule? establishes the scoundrel?s primary philosophical question when it comes to monogamy: Is it cheating if it happens in a different ZIP code from the one occupied by your S.O? And all too often, the conclusion is: ?What they don?t know won?t hurt them.? As a bonus, if the S.O. does find out, he or she will likely be too far away to key a car or smash some plates. A cad will behave like a cad no matter what, but the chances are perhaps greater when his or her S.O. lives far, far away.

Monogamy can be a challenge over time even under direct supervision. (Of course, ideally, direct supervision isn?t a requirement for monogamy.) Most people, though, are either the cheating sort or decidedly not. But some people who would normally stay true to their S.O. don?t respond well to long-term physical separation. Loneliness creeps in, new and interesting people appear when you least expect it, and then there?s alcohol. More than a few bad romantic decisions have been made under less-than-clear-headed circumstances. (It also presents a twist on the ZIP code question for deceitful boyfriends and girlfriends everywhere: ?Does it count if I barely remember it??)

Distance, loneliness and alcohol often grease the tracks for the derailment of a long-distance relationship.

This leads to our next reason long-distance relationships just don?t work: a lack of trust.

7: Lack of Trust

If you?re currently in a long-distance relationship and have just read the preceding section, you?re probably freaked out by now. And by freaking out, you may just jeopardize an otherwise healthy long-distance relationship. (Sorry about that.)

Plenty of relationships end because of trust issues (whether real or perceived), and long-distance relationships are a minefield of them. There?s really no way of knowing whether or not an S.O. on the other side of the country is cheating on you. But remember that close proximity offers no guarantees, either. A healthy, monogamous relationship requires of its participants a moral compass, ethical grounding, commitment and devotion. A trusting relationship has a lot to do with your personalities, your dating histories, your behavioral patterns and whether you?re naturally a jealous person.

If your S.O. is very flirtatious or has issues with being on his or her own, you may be dealing with a batch of real or perceived problems ? and the difference between the two, as it relates to the health of your relationship, is negligible.

Your S.O. may not have a wandering eye, but your fear that he or she does may cause your long-distance relationship to collapse under the weight of suspicion. Or, in a misguided effort to protect your heart, you may decide to make some bad decisions of your own.

But, as we?ll find out next, even if jealousy doesn?t ruin your long-distance relationship, financial strain could.
6: The Cost of Keeping in Touch

While you were once able to meet for a sandwich and hang out downtown, getting together with your S.O. these days may mean booking airline tickets and securing hotel reservations.

For people in romantic relationships who live in different regions of the country, a few yearly visits to maintain the relationship could cost big bucks. Add to that long-distance phone bills, the shipping costs for care packages, and going all-out when you do get to spend time together, and you may be looking at a pretty pricy love connection.

Of course, overall, your relationship?s financial costs may actually be the same or less, since all those former daily outings and nighttime entertainments aren?t happening ? but that?s assuming your social life shuts down in the absence of your S.O. More likely, you still go out, but now you hit the town with your friends instead of your sweetie. In fact, a sense of loneliness or a need for distraction may leave you with a fuller social schedule than you had before the commencement of your long-distance relationship.

Even if you tighten your financial belt on regular social outings, the costs of maintaining that long-distance relationship can be quite high. There?s the expense of traveling to one another (pricy either by car, train or plane), taking time off from work and kenneling a dog, as well as what you?ll actually pay while in each other?s presence after long periods of separation.
5: Time Versus Returns

Depending on the personalities and approaches of both parties, maintaining a long-distance relationship can be time-consuming with little in the way of return on the investment.

The frequent e-mails, phone calls and cards sent through the mail take up a lot of time and effort, and as it turns out, keeping up with each other?s news isn?t necessarily the same as growing closer.

As more time passes, the distant object of your affections can begin to seem like something abstract and less than real. An e-mail in your inbox isn?t the same as having someone nearby who can help you in person, who can share your day with you, and who can create new memories with you. The distance can be a serious wound to a relationship, and the efforts to maintain long-distance contact can seem like mere bandages placed on a gushing artery.

Eventually, the growing loneliness may make the wound too severe to warrant more ?treatment? ? it may be time to declare time of death.

If concrete plans to reunite aren?t in the near future, the projected gains may be too little to warrant moving the relationship down the temporal road.
4: Prelude to a Breakup

You?ve done everything in your power to keep your long-distance relationship going strong, but it still seems like it?s faltering. You write letters, keep up with your S.O.?s life through phone calls, and plan frequent get-togethers whenever your schedules allow. So why isn?t it working out?

Sometimes, long-distance relationships are designed to fail. It can be ? in one person?s thinking, at least ? a safe way to start a new life without right away losing the security and stability of his or her previous life. Even if a person has no intention of staying in a long-distance relationship, he or she may also fear jumping into a new environment without any support system whatsoever. However, once the new surroundings start to feel familiar, those phone calls ?back home? may decrease in frequency, duration and interest.

Aside from the sense of security a (temporary) long-distance relationship can provide, some people just don?t like initiating the emotional havoc that breaking up inevitably causes. For people who prefer to avoid confrontation at all costs, going long-distance with a S.O. may be one in a series of never-ending steps that lead to an eventual breakup ? likely after the other person takes the initiative on their own after finally getting the hint. Whereas breaking up on the telephone is in exceedingly poor taste in a normal relationship, there may be no other option in a long-distance relationship, and this may appeal to someone who?s scheduling a move across the country ? and a breakup to go with it.

3: Different Expectations

What we ? and our partners ? expect out of a long-distance relationship goes a long way in determining our happiness and the success of those relationships.

?Long-distance relationship? can mean different things to different people. It may mean ?heart-wrenching tragedy? to one person, while for the other partner it means ?year-long vacation.?

If a couple doesn?t share the same expectations before the separation occurs, it can spell doom for a long-distance relationship. For one half of the couple, it may be viewed as a test of the relationship?s strength, with an eye toward reuniting as soon as possible. The other, however, may view the separation as a fresh taste of life all on one?s own. A boyfriend or girlfriend who wants to talk 10 times a day isn?t going to appreciate a partner who thinks it?s ideal to check in every few days. Even over a scratchy phone connection, it won?t take long for someone to realize that his or her S.O. doesn?t share the same feelings about the separation.

Not only do expectations matter when it comes to navigating the pitfalls of long-distance relationships, they also matter when it comes to determining where the whole thing is even going. Is the separation somehow moving the relationship ahead a step, or does the distance mean it?s moving in a less hopeful direction?
2: Separation Issues

Nobody likes to feel abandoned, and that feeling can rear its head when one member of a romantic couple moves out of town. The weeks and months leading up to it are likely to be colored by the impending physical separation. The anxiety and even anger that can result can drive a couple emotionally apart before they?ve even stopped sharing a location.

Some people respond to separation better than others. For those who have experienced some real or perceived episode of abandonment as a child, it can prove nearly overwhelming when a romantic partner moves away without first severing emotional ties. The situation can be exacerbated if one person in the relationship didn?t have any say in the decision and feels powerless to affect how the relationship is evolving.

Of course, physical separation will almost always result in an initial sense of increased anxiety and unhappiness. Often, the hurt feelings fade away and the relationship recovers, even at a distance. On the other hand, these feelings can also contribute to a sharp deterioration of the relationship, which is now measured in miles instead of shared dreams.

1: Life Goes On

Many long-distance relationships are the result of not having a better answer to shifting circumstances that require two people in a relationship to live in different cities or regions.

With lease arrangements, career concerns and indecision, long-distance relationships can represent a holding pattern. Life doesn?t naturally maintain holding patterns for very long. A couple in a long-distance relationship may not even notice the seismic change that is pulling them apart emotionally. Interests, values and friends may cause them to drift apart slowly and subtly. Or, depending on how different the two living environments are, these foundation-shifting changes may occur quickly and noticeably.

Not all relationships are built to last, and the ending of a long-distance relationship can only sometimes be blamed on the distance alone. There?s always the possibility the distance served as a catalyst for something inevitable. Some relationships simply aren?t workable in the first place, and attempting to maintain them at a great distance can only serve to illustrate it with additional clarity.

Unpredictable X-factors occur: One day, someone wakes up feeling like he or she isn?t in love anymore, or meets a new romantic interest. Careers advance and new opportunities present themselves that only serve to move people even further apart on the map than they already are.

Many long-distance relationships end because the world keeps turning, but fortunately for those whose long-distance relationship ends, life goes on for them, as well.
