Major ISPs agree to FCC's code of conduct on botnets, DNS attacks

The FCC's campaign to secure the internet gained new momentum last week, when a group of major ISPs signed on to a new code of conduct aimed at mitigating cybercrime. Adopted by the FCC's Communications, Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council (CSRIC), the new code targets three main security threats: botnets, DNS attacks and internet route hijacking. The Anti-Bot Code of Conduct invites ISPs to adopt sharper detection methods, and to notify and assist consumers whenever their computers are infected. The DNS code, meanwhile, offers a list of best practices by which ISPs can tighten security. Though it doesn't call for a full adoption of DNSSEC technology, the guidelines do represent a "first step" toward implementation, allowing web users to verify the authenticity of their online destinations. As for internet route attacks, the CSRIC calls for a similarly collective approach, asking ISPs to collaborate on new technologies within an industry-wide framework.

In a statement, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said that these practices "identify smart, practical, voluntary solutions that will materially improve the cyber security of commercial networks and bolster the broader endeavors of our federal partners." The industry apparently agrees, as heavyweights like AT&T, CenturyLink, Comcast, Cox, Sprint, Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile and Verizon have already signed on. BofA to offer rentals as foreclosure alternative

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bank of America says it has begun a pilot program offering some of its mortgage customers who are facing foreclosure a chance to stay in their homes by becoming renters instead of owners.

The "Mortgage to Lease" program, which was launched this week, will be available to fewer than 1,000 BofA customers selected by the bank in test markets in Arizona, Nevada and New York.

Participants will transfer their home's title to the bank, which will then forgive the outstanding mortgage debt. In exchange, they will be able to lease their home for up to three years at or below the rental market rate. The rent will be less than the participants' current mortgage payments and customers will not have to pay property taxes or homeowners insurance, the bank said.

"This pilot will help determine whether conversion from homeownership to rental is something our customers, the community and investors will support," Ron Sturzenegger, legacy asset servicing executive of Bank of America, said in a statement.

Among requirements to qualify for the program, homeowners must have a BofA loan, be behind at least 60 days on payments and be "underwater," owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

The bank based in Charlotte, N.C., said it will at first own the homes, then sell them to investors. If the program is successful, it could be expanded to include real-estate investors who buy qualifying properties and keep the occupants on as tenants.

"If this evolves from a pilot into a more broadly based program, we also see potential benefits from helping to stabilize housing prices in the surrounding community and curtail neighborhood blight by keeping a portion of distressed properties off the market," Sturzenegger said.

Foreclosure tracking firm RealtyTrac says foreclosure activity has picked up in some states, as banks deal with a backlog of homes with mortgages that had gone unpaid yet remained in limbo due to delays stemming from foreclosure-abuse claims, according to

Nevada has the nation's highest foreclosure rate as of last month, with one in every 278 households in the state receiving a foreclosure-related filing, twice the national average, according to RealtyTrac. Arizona ranks third behind California, while New York has not been as hard hit, with one in every 4,604 households receiving a foreclosure-related filing.

'The Real Mitt Romney' video: long on wit, short on politics

YouTube has its own logic and its own idiosyncratic style. The monster video depot now attracts a stratospherically bigger audience than any newspaper or TV network. So it's natural that this week a video about Mitt Romney?"Will the Real Mitt Romney Please Stand Up?"?attracted far, far more attention than reams of text-only articles about the candidate, even as he seemed to sew up the nomination. The video has already reaped over a million views.

"The Real Mitt Romney" is brilliantly funny. But it's hardly a call to arms, either for or against the former Massachusetts governor. Voters who spend time on YouTube?that's just about everybody, whether you know it or not, thanks to the ubiquity of the site's embed code?will recognize this video as delivering neither news about the real world (as Barack Obama's speech videos did) nor a tight polemic (as traditional campaign ads do) nor a goad to anger or fear (like George Bush's 1988 ads attacking Michael Dukakis did). Funny will get you laughs, but it doesn't get you votes. And it doesn't win you elections.

Both "The Real Mitt Romney" video and the Etch-A-Sketch comment made Wednesday by a Romney aide?construed by critics to suggest his boss could wipe his conservative primary slate clean and appeal to a more centrist electorate come November?play tangentially to caricatures of Romney as inconsistent and inauthentic. But to Internet users neither the comment nor the parody video really lands the point. If Romney keeps refusing to come into focus as a candidate, so too does the case against him. Romney's many foes in the media have been quick to claim "The Real Mitt Romney" video as a user-generated K.O. of the candidate?but that's not exactly how the video plays. In fact, the video itself flip-flops, because, as should be crystal-clear to another who watches "auto-tune the news" and other quasi-political stuff on YouTube, it's not an act of searing satire as much as a goofy, if charming, experiment with Final Cut Pro.

In this way, "The Real Mitt Romney" is much different from the hugely popular videos that defined Obama's digital presence back in the day. In 2007 and 2008, Obama supporters discovered near-delirious devotion to their man in videos like "I've Got A Crush on Obama" (24 million views) and will.i.am's "Yes We Can" (23.8 million views). The mad popular Obama campaign videos?especially bespoke footage of Obama's "More Perfect Union" speech in Philadelphia, and his "Yes We Can" speech in Nashua, NH?went a long way to making the president's election feel like an actual movement. Gaffe videos, like that "Bomb Iran" beaut starring John McCain, practically took the place of gotcha interviews (unless John Edwards and a baby were involved) and made voters feel like they were able to pierce the campaign bunting and see through to candidates' souls.

Instead of packing an emotional punch, "The Real Mitt Romney" aims for that gentle "neato" effect refined by online videographers who are long on Final Cut Pro skills and short on conviction. The recut, which mashes up archival images of Obama and Romney and others, is not meant to lock in a victory for its title character, or to deal him a fatal blow. As a piece of rhetoric, it's nothing more or less than a precise act of noticing. Formally impeccable, it's careless with content. The most it can be said to do, philosophically, is call attention to droll repetitions and cultural ironies, in the mild and yet surefire way that Jerry Seinfeld used to do. It's Gen-X noodling using Millennials technology.

It's amusing, then. It's neato. It's just not rousing.

But maybe that's to be expected, given that the creator, Hugh Atkin, is an Australian studying law at Oxford and presumably can't vote in American elections.

Yesterday Frank Rich valiantly argued in New York Magazine that the video "shows exactly what Romney is incapable of learning: humor, any fluency with the pop culture devoured by his fellow citizens." Rich's was a fair effort to treat the video as hard-hitting. But Obama appears in the video too, saying "please stand up" over and over, and his "stand ups" at times seem hilariously forced, as when he seems to be awkwardly motioning aside a diminutive Greek Orthodox priest at some church-state affair or another. The video focuses on Obama's body language that suggests he has trouble mustering authority, somehow, like a substitute teacher. Sure, Obama may be out as a sometime Eminem fan, but the video doesn't depict the president as any more authentic or clued in to pop culture than Romney is.

How's that analysis for ruining a joke?

It's hard to find the point of "The Real Mitt Romney"?just like it's hard to find the point of Jerry Seinfeld, Eminem or mashups themselves. But having a point is not the point of this kind of rhetoric. Pure comic pleasure is more like it, as I'm sure Mr. Atkin would attest. Sure, the phrase "the real Mitt Romney" has been kicked around a little bit on TV, as critics try to create a story around the idea that Romney's somehow a phony. But the reason the video plays that phrase over and over again is not to drive home Romney's insubstantial nature, but to groove on a childlike diversion: the syllabic similarity of "Mitt Romney" to "Slim Shady." My name is. My name is. My name is Mitt Romney.

Rhyme without reason may not save lives, or make Presidents, but it does have its charms. After watching the video, I didn't double-check Romney's voting history. I didn't try to nail down his position on energy dependence, the debt or the Supreme Court. I just wasn't thinking about Romney?or politics at all. Instead, I watched, for the third or fourth time, Eminem perform "The Real Slim Shady" at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. On YouTube. It was great.

The Motivation Station: Motivation Monday ? Health and Fitness ...

Here at Motivation Monday I?ve been doing a series on Health and fitness for the last 6 weeks. I?ve presented challenges,tools, articles, assignments and invited all of you to participate along with me. Here?s a little recap of the past 6 weeks along with the links for each post if you are just joining us?

Health and Fitness ? Time to focus on health and fitness! I presented a list of 10 things we could do in order to prepare ourselves both mentally and physically to start taking better care of ourselves. I called the first 3 weeks our pre-training time.

Health and Fitness Challenge ? I repeated the 10 things list complete with my answers. I had started daily walks and healthier eating and challenged you to do the same.

?

Final Pre-Training Week ? I suggested we start using helpful tracking tools ? My Fitness Pal to track food and exercise to get an idea of our average nutrition intake and calories burned during exercise. I also suggested wearing a pedometer to see what our steps are like on average, prior to making any changes or setting new goals.

Making Fitness Fun ? Just fun little things we can all do to add little bits of fitness to our day.

?

Muscle ? Building muscle is so important! I dedicated my fitness focus to building muscle at this point, and I challenged you to grab some weights and learn how to use them too.?

?

Transformation ? I read the book Transformation, joined the website and the 12 week spring challenge. I also began the Transformation 5/25 workout plan.

?

I started out slowly but stuck with my goals each week. I?m getting stronger each day, my endurance is building, I?ve lost 10 pounds, 2 inches from my waist, and my body-fat levels are down a full 5%.?

How are you coming along on your own health and fitness goals?

The hows and whys don?t really matter. When it comes down to the bottom line it?s pretty simple ? either we do it or we don?t.?

The mass of bees will heat the area up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius), enough to kill the hornet.

Scientists discovered these bee balls in 2005 and have been studying them ever since. Now researchers have figured out the bee-brain mechanism that regulates the thermo-balling behavior in Japanese honeybees but not in their relatives, the European honeybees.

The researchers plucked honeybees from the hot defensive bee ball at different times to see what parts of the brain were active. They found that cells in brain centers involved in complex behaviors were more active when in the hot ball than when the bees were carrying out other activities.

"It might be that the neurons located in this area are also involved in processing thermal information in the worker honeybees," the researchers wrote in the paper, published March 14 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Howell leads 'Pack past Aztecs 79-65

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Richard Howell has been a solid, if often overlooked, part of North Carolina State's resurgence this season.

On Friday, he decided to step into the spotlight.

Howell doubled his average, scoring 22 points, and 11th-seeded North Carolina State used its muscle inside and a sticky defense to upset San Diego State 79-65 in a second-round East Regional game.

"None of us had ever played in a game like this," Howell said. "This gave us a big confidence boost."

The 6-foot-8, 250-pound Howell got the Wolfpack (23-12) off on the right foot with 15 first-half points, carrying them into a showdown with No. 3 seed Georgetown on Sunday at Nationwide Arena.

"In today's game, we felt we could have success around the basket," first-year coach Mark Gottfried said. "We made the decision to go toward Richard, and he lit up like a Christmas tree."

It was easy to see that the Wolfpack had a size advantage on the surprising Aztecs (26-8), who were back in the tournament despite losing four starters from last year's squad that lost to eventual champion Connecticut.in the regional semifinals.

But what the Wolfpack ? and Howell in particular ? did in the paint was almost scary to watch.

"It's one thing to be big," San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said. "It's another thing to be big and good. And they were big and good. Obviously, Richard Howell was great for them and got them out of the gate. He was fantastic."

Lorenzo Brown added 17 points, C.J. Leslie 15 and Scott Wood 10 for the Wolfpack, who are now 12-5 in their first NCAA games. North Carolina State has won at least a game in seven of its last eight trips.

It's been a remarkable turnaround for the Wolfpack under Gottfried. They've improved by eight wins over last season, which ended with the firing of coach Sidney Lowe, and they made it to the NCAA tournament despite losing four in a row in February.

Howell, averaging 10.7 points a game, hit 7 of 9 shots ? including some where he stepped outside to pour in jumpers.

"He does it all the time in practice," said Brown, who also chipped in with eight assists. "I'm just glad he was hitting good shots. He was just feeling it, I guess."

Jamaal Franklin had 23 points and Chase Tapley 19 for the Aztecs (26-8), regular-season champs of the Mountain West.

"I could have seen us going farther," Franklin said. "That's why I'm disappointed."

Up by four at the break thanks to Howell, the Wolfpack didn't let up. Wood's 3-pointer from the right corner pushed the lead to 43-36.

Howell scored his final points on a spin move that he turned into a three-point play with 10:08 left that gave the Wolfpack a 57-50 lead. On that same play, he drew a fourth foul on the Aztecs' best big man, Tim Shelton.

Still, with the Aztecs scoring on five consecutive possessions, they drew to 57-54.

"We've been through a lot this year," Brown said. "We've played a lot of great teams, like Syracuse and North Carolina and teams like that. Coming down to the end, we made big shots."

They did once again.

Out of the timeout, CJ Williams hit a short jumper. After a San Diego State miss, Brown made a 14-footer with a hand in his face for a 61-54 lead.

After Garrett Green dunked for the Aztecs, the Wolfpack came right back with back-to-back baskets to get some breathing room. First, Leslie dribbled laterally to the lane and pulled up to hit a 12-foot jumper. The Aztecs missed, then DeShawn Painter had the first of his two huge plays. He hit a fade from the left baseline for a 65-56 lead. He later added a three-point play to push the lead to 68-58.

The Wolfpack, a popular choice to pull the upset, will have a hard time sneaking up on anyone else.

"I have believed if they did things the right way, if they played good defense and executed at the right times, they had a chance," Gottfried said.

Plus, they also had a secret weapon.

"I didn't want this to be our last game," Howell said.

Lawsuit slams 'apps' for mining smartphone contacts

A small group of US smartphone owners has filed a lawsuit demanding that Facebook, Twitter and other makers of smartphone "apps" pay dearly for mining people's contact lists.

The suit filed in federal court in Austin, Texas on Monday listed Apple among the defendants, arguing that mini-programs are not allowed on the company's coveted iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch devices without its approval.

Lawyers representing the 13 Austin smartphone owners argue that the applications invaded people's privacy by "stealing" personal address book data.

A hot trend toward making applications "mobile and social" resulted in smartphone users' contact lists being tapped into to help find friends or family members that people might want to connect with in online communities.

But the lawsuit argues that delving into address book data without express permission is an invasion of privacy.

The list of defendants included "Angry Birds" game creator Rovio and US videogame giant Electronic Arts, as well as career-centered social network LinkedIn.

"Essentially, on the cheap and on the sly these defendants have impermissibly mined their App users' phones for contact data," lawyers stated in court documents made available online Thursday.

The suit calls for a court order barring the practice and for the 18 companies listed as defendants, including Facebook and Twitter, to pay substantial cash damages.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Actor Russell Brand turned himself in Thursday afternoon to New Orleans police after an arrest warrant was issued for him on a charge of simple criminal damage to property valued at $700, authorities said.

Brand posted bond and was released from jail Thursday afternoon, said police spokesman Frank Robertson. Bond had been set at $5,000, he said.

Police issued the warrant earlier Thursday for Brand, who is in New Orleans to film an untitled movie.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden on Thursday could not immediately release details of what happened Monday. Celebrity website TMZ said the charges stem from a confrontation with a photographer who was trying to take Brand's photo from a car.

In a Twitter posting on Wednesday, Brand wrote, "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory."

Neither Brand nor his publicist could immediately be reached for comment.

Brand's film credits include "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek." A judge recently granted him a divorce from singer Katy Perry.

Mandate Pictures, which is producing the untitled comedy in New Orleans, said it is being directed by "Young Adult" and "Juno" writer Diablo Cody.

The film also stars two-time "Dancing With the Stars" champ Julianne Hough, Octavia Spencer, who recently won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the movie "The Help," as well as Nick Offerman and Holly Hunter.

Cyprus church strikes tax deal with government

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) -- Cyprus' finance minister says a longstanding tax dispute with the island's influential Orthodox Christian church has been resolved under a new deal taxing future church property transactions and writing off tens of millions of euros in back taxes.

Kikis Kazamias says the deal, which the Cabinet approved Wednesday, improves on a stalled 2005 accord and obligates the church to pay tax once it buys, sells or exchanges a property from now on. It also scraps the perk of clergy buying tax-free cars.

Church Treasury Chief Ioannis Charilaou hailed the agreement, saying that the church wants to support the state.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? Our company employees always do their best in order to fulfill my requests and their duties. I love how they work so hard because it is what keeps my business going. At the end of the year, I want to give them something like an incentive so that they would know that I really appreciate all their efforts. With that, I decided to hold a getaway party where all the employees and staff of my company would come together to celebrate. I got a vacation organizer where we would have several activities at a private resort. The organizer said that I should have?team building activities?so that it would make the bond of my employees closer. I had no idea then what the activities will be and so I searched online for some?team building?happenings. I was just so lucky when I found this site because they really specialized in things like that. I did not have a problem anymore since they know so many activities where my employees would surely enjoy.

Knee injury ends Rubio's NBA season

Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio's rookie NBA season is over after suffering a torn left knee ligament and he will most likely miss the London Olympics.

The 21-year-old standout for the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves suffered the anterior-cruciate ligament tear on Friday night in a 105-102 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

With recovery time from such injuries typically six to nine months, the injury almost certainly dooms his hopes to play for Spain in July at the London Olympics, a major setback for a strong Spanish side filled with NBA talent.

Rubio moved to help defend Lakers star Kobe Bryant in the final seconds and the Spaniard's left knee buckled just before he and Bryant collided.
