KPL HealthLink: The Bottom Line About Colorectal Cancer

Although it certainly isn't the most pleasant topic to think about, colorectal cancer is not a health issue you want to ignore. On average, 61 Canadians are diagnosed with the disease everyday and it's the second deadliest form of cancer. The good news is that the disease is highly preventable through screening. March is colorectal cancer awareness month, so what better time to learn more and find out what you can do to prevent it?

- If you are 50 years and over, schedule a colon cancer screening
- See a doctor if you have any colon cancer symptoms?
- Eat a balanced diet (lots of fruits, veggies & whole grains) and limit red or processed meats
- Maintain a healthy body weight & active lifestyle
- Don't smoke and reduce alcohol consumption
- Consider seeing a genetic counselor if you have a strong family history of the disease
